Carolina, here's a great tip for when you need to extinguish a bowl you plan on returning to. Wine bottle cork. I cut them in half so they're not as long and don't stick up so high off the top of the pipe bowl. You may need to shave one end down a bit to better fit your pipe's chamber. Or you may need a larger cork for larger chambered pipes. But I carry one with me when out and about, and if I need to stop smoking, I simply squeeze the cork into the bowl and the embers go out. Also, they don't stick too far down into the bowl, so I'm not overly tamping down my tobacco or tightening the pack too much. When you're ready to return to your smoke, remove the cork, light up, good to go.
Edit to add: And if you get bumped, the tobacco ashes won't get knocked out and spill into your pocket.

O.K. Going to try cube cutting again then. Thanks gents.
The wine cork is an awesome idea. Great... Time to buy some more wine! Thanks ar74.

Wine bottle cork.

Nah, just get a Savinelli Tortuga, c'mon, you know you want another pipe. :D
OK, switching to serious mode... how long do you keep the thumb covering the bowl? I've been putting out my pipe with the tamper, but maybe that's a crappy practice.

Tightly cover the chamber with your hand so that it's air tight and draw on the stem. The vacuum you create will extinguish the ember.

It's one of those things I myself learned on this very forum way back when I first joined :puffy: And the learning never stops.

Good thread. Covers lots of vital info! I have an un-opened tin of ODF waiting for attention and half a bottle of Wolf Blass red wine getting immediate treatment. Where did that cork go...

That's the only time I get a perfect smoke. When something is going to go down. Never fails.

I don't like interruptions so I dedicate time to pipe smoking.

Other people may have good simultaneous capacity but I sure don't.

No multitasking for me, thanks.

I tend to find that plug doesn't fall out of my pipes since I have taken to folding and stuffing the slices. Once you get the stuff going I find it tends to burn evenly but you have to use the pipe tool to empty the bowl as I never knock out my pipes due to fragile nature of 'cutty' stems. Usually if I am in the middle of a good pipe bowl I never respond to the phone since nothing 'should interfere with that Condor moment' as the 1970s advert used to say!

Happens quite a bit. That is why I never smoke at work, never know when I will have to leave. That and I like my work and relax time separate.
I do find my interruptions are less overall when the wife is home.
