When I grab my pipe and my coffee, he gets up to beat me to the door to sit on the back porch with me. And when I'm Done and blow through the pipe to clear it, he stands up and waits for me to go back in. Pictures to come soon, when my computer gets fixed . Ten year old 120 lb German Sheppard malamute mix named Kane.
Either I smoke too much, or he's just Damn smart.

Dogs, cats, and other creatures have serious intelligence. Science, so far, has rather fumbled in their efforts to appreciate the dimensions of this, and the questions they attempt to answer are sometimes, and quite often, absurdly condescending. Creatures that take us up as food sources and social groups study us in depth and know things about their people that their people and family and friends don't. We're their ecology and their living, so they consider us their job and income. Looked at correctly, these species are our parent species and vastly exceed us in age and evolutionary success. We, on the other hand, teeter on exterminating our species and many or most others, which is not a successful strategy for survival.

I try to keep my cats away, second hand smoke and all, but both seem quite content to nap on my lap while smoking. As far as your dog didimauw, I've read that dogs have the intelligence of a five year old child, making them more human than people originally thought, and more family than pet. You've got a great buddy there.

Pavlov was in the bar when the phone rang. "Oh no!", he said, "I forgot to feed the dogs!"

I believe that dogs like to follow a routine. I have a female Corgi mix that is by my side almost 24 hours a day. She knows my routine as well as I do. First thing every morning when I get up she knows it's time to go out. When she comes back in she leads me upstairs to the kitchen for coffee, then to the computer room. When I need more coffee I tell her that and she leads me back to the kitchen. When I'm done on the computer she leads me back down stairs to the shop without me saying a word. When I pick up my keys she heads for the garage door.
Your dog has learned your routine and is probably a bit put off when you don't follow it ! Mine is !!
That's a beautiful dog you have. Love the color of his fur!!

My bouvier is deeply offended if she doesn't smoke with me. Grabbing a pipe equals instant dog appearance. I think she'd like me to smoke larger pipes.

Ha! My dog Gypsy is the same way! If I so much as open the drawer where I keep my smoking accessories she is at the back door prancing and jumping around, looking forward to a couple hours of yard time.
