I know there's another burley thread on the go but I wanted to dedicate one to burley blends available in the EU.

I've recently began to suspect that my taste leans towards burley. Although I'm a relatively new smoker and the range of blends I've tried is limited, Solani Aged Burley Flake remains the best thing I've ever smoked. It was the first thing that really "clicked" with me.

I wanted to ask about Burley blends available in the EU and, in particular, how these line up against one another.

I have HU Makhuwa which I do find to have a similarity to ABF however the burleys taste "greener" and grassier and the perique does seem to dampen some of the burley taste. How does something like HU Nashville County compared to these?

Is HU the main player for EU burley blends? I'm going to try a few more Burleys but I suspect I'll end up deep cellaring ABF.

I dont claim to be an expert, but while I like HU, my mind does not go stright to them when I think of Burley...vapers yes. If you like ABF that much grab it!

Haunted Bookshop Cake and Old Joe Krantz are available in Europe but at a premium price. The prices für a 57gr tin are 18.90€ for HB and 19.90€ for OJK. Hope this helps. Amorpha Burley is still stocked at most retailers atleast in Germany.

Haven't had much HU or any Solani, but somebody will inevitably mention Semois.
It's a bit different from normal Burley, but it's European availability ought to be pretty decent because it's grown and processed in Belgium.
Interesting, I've seen this name thrown around but didn't realize it was a Belgian product. I'll look into it, thanks.

Yeah, I think I will end up cellaring ABF heavily. I don't want to go down the rabbit of hole of thinking that there's always something better out there. I'm not so much looking for an alternative to ABF, more looking for other burleys to try so that I can understand the leaf a bit better.

The price of HB has always put me off of it but I think I will at least try a tin to see what it's all about. Amphora is a brand I'm never tried (I admit the pouches always made me assume they were goopy aromatics). I'll have to try a pouch of the burley, thanks.

HU Dockworker is a very good burley blend but imho the Orientals play a big role. As a matter of fact I will open a tin soon.
I agree regarding dockworker. I've had a few bowls and I think it's helped me identify the flavour of orientals. Previously I'd only had them in the presence of latakia so having them in this format helped me isolate the taste.

Torben Dansk Burley Maduro is great in my opinion. It's sold as a blender, so it's less adorned than ABF, but a very delicious example of straight burley. It doesn't seem to be very popular. It might have been such a sleeper that they've discontinued it since the last time I looked.

In either case, you might enjoy it!

Thanks for this suggestion. I see they do a "Burley" and a "Burley Maduro". Have you tried both?

Supposedly Reiners long golden flake has white burley. I get more Virginia from it. Bit being in the EU it is WELL worth trying. Its pretty awesome stuff…enough that it sells out in the US for wuite a premium price. Occasionally we win on this side of the waters.
I've not tried any Reiner's before. Next time I'm able to, I'll grab a tin, thanks.

How does OJK compare to Haunted Bookshop? I've read conflicting reports on this so I'd be interested in your thoughts.

IMHO HB has a slight edge over OJK, probably because it has been pressed into cake format . Both could be an all day smoke if it wasn't for the price. I was wrong about the prices HB is 18,90€ and OJK is 20,90. I haven't really developed the ability to distingiush between the component since both are basically the same and just different proportions. When it tastes good to me I will smoke it 😀.

Thanks, I will try HB first. I'm lucky enough that if I like it I can have folks bring me some when they visit from the USA!

You might look for some Wessex Burley Slices. I've not tried it but I've seen it recommended often among burlyphiles. And I believe the HH line of MacBaren will continue to be available in Europe, so the burley flake would be a must.
That's one I'd love to try, although I believe that, despite being made in Germany, Wessex tobacco is only sold stateside.
