I know that you younger smokers are probably tired of hearing old goats like me talk about how much harder it was to learn about pipe smoking in the old days before the internet.Back then the only places I knew to ask questions were smoke shops.I got laughed at a good many times for going into some smoke shop and asking questions because most of them were silly questions..Things like why are they called basket pipes? What does a filter actually filter? Does Virginia tobacco come from Virginia? Maybe the most embarrassing one of all.One day I walked into a smoke shop and asked the fella working there if he sold used pipes. When he told me that he sold eatate pipes I asked him who died..So you see it really is easier now that we have sites like this.

Yes it is! But that's the way it is with everything, well, most everything. For instance, in this "heat-wave", it's easier for me to get a good night's rest with my central air than it was for my grandparents with a fan in the room. Also, if you wanted to screw a couple of boards together, you had to drill a pilot hole first, then use a screwdriver to get the screw in by hand (which is part of the reason why nails were used so much). Now, I just take the screw, and drive it in with my 18-volt cordless drill with a screwdriver bit. Kinda makes you wonder what my grandkids lives will be like and how my way of doing things will seem old and backwards...

In the late 1960's my pipes and tobacco all came from a drugstore. Learning was by trial and error. Error, mostly.

Then I discovered Iwan Ries, Inc., whose helpful staff answered my questions and treated me with a dignity deserving of a gentleman.

That, and the exposure to quality tobaccos made all the difference. :)

I was lucky. I began my freshman year of college (1966) shortly after I started smoking. I passed a B&M on the edge of campus on my way to and from classes and stopped in. It had just opened and was run by a really nice gentleman who had just retired and looked on the shop as more of a hobby than as a means of making a living. He loved pipes and tobacco and enjoyed sharing that love with others.

Yeah, I've thought that myself. When I got started, I can't tell you how many youtube videos I watched for everything from how to tamp, to lighting, tobaccos, the whole shootin' match. But if it weren't for the old timers, who would have passed on the hobby? So, thanks old guys for staying the course and putting up with us newbees when we do have questions.

While I'm one of these new pipe smokers, most of what I first learned was by asking my friends father. I asked pretty much the same questions. I also asked the fine folks at Pipes and Pleasures a lot of questions. But, I've still used the internet to learn a lot.

If you don't have air con and use a fan point it at the ceiling towards a corner in doing so the cool air will push heat down and thus cool the room. As for learning about pipes i have learnt from the web sites such as these forums and from the guy at my nearest tobacconist i have also started to goto a pipe club to pick up more i enjoy my pipe more this time around than when i stopped smoking them some 20 years ago.
