I say buy what you want when you can get it and don't worry about what the other guy is doing. That's how I buy stocks and that's how I buy tobacco.

Easy to say when you have five figures in your hobby budget, not to mention tobacco enough to smoke until Picard becomes captain of the Enterprise.

Ouch, you guys are harsh. I just got back from delivering papers on my paper route (a job I took in the evenings just to earn tobacco and pipe money) only to find this disparaging thread. I am wounded by your words.

P.S. Hate purchase restrictions
This is to keep one person or a handful of people from buying up all the inventory. I think it's smart for retailers to do this, it allows them to satisfy more of their customers. If a retailer had 100 bags of tobacco, and all of them could be bought by one person, guess what? They either go right into the cellar, or end up on ebay at a huge markup. And some people would gladly buy them.
Besides, could you imagine how many customers they would have to contact? Customers who had a few bags in their carts could get none if someone beats them to the punch and buys more. all because they pressed the "submit order" button a few seconds earlier, and tried to get their hands on as many bags as possible. What a headache!

I don't subscribe to the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality. You have the money and the opportunity - you should be able to buy as much as you want. Sometimes in life you win, sometimes you lose; as long as it's fair game, it's all good.
Let's say you get to buy your one tin of Penzance and you really like it. Then what? Ebay now is your ONLY source for Penzance, since you already had you ration at the tobacconist. See how communism doesn't work? You are essentially forced to be on the black market :)

It isn't communism- it is a choice made by individual businesses. If you don't like it shop somewhere else. That's called capitalism.

I'm not sure about the across-the-board increases, who wants to pay $50 for Cardiff?
And when the fook is some more Hastings gonna get here?!?!?
I love that stuff and I'm all out,

but I would not want to pay $50 for it.

I thought a basic tenet of Communism is "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need". Well, damn it, I NEED five pounds of Penzance!
This topic reminds me of the concert ticket snafu that comes up in the press occasionally, where third party purchasers buy up big blocks of concert tickets and resell them at a premium.

I'll have to disagree. Capitalism is price reflected by supply and demand, not rationing. When supply is scarce, capitalism solves the problem by increasing the price, while communism solves it by rationing the supply.

There will always be small mom and pops who are incredibly grateful when I call them up and order 5 pounds of Samuel Gawith St James Flake in one shot. These kinds of stores never put on limits as they want to turn their inventory and keep their cash flow going. One guy offered to sell me 15 bags of Stonehaven and 21 bags of Penzance. I only needed 6 bags of the Stonehaven to finish my cellaring of that blend so I called a buddy and he grabbed a ton of stuff from him. This retailer was so damn happy as it normally takes him months to sell that kind of quantity.
If you think you are going to be able to fulfill your demands for hard to finds by sitting around waiting for SP, PC and 4noggins then keep dreaming. Of the 14 pounds of Stonehaven I have in my cellar, I got one 8oz bag from 4noggins and all of the rest from small mom and pops and from trading. It took all of 6-8 months to grab all 14 pounds, so please no whining when it comes to hard to finds. They are out there in vast quantities( much like the Fremin for you Dune fans) and all you have to do is let your fingers do thee walking. I start with all the low tax states and have yet to have to dial a higher tax state.
Here is the state tax list, now get to work and stop your belly aching.

Now I know for some people trying to get hard to finds is abhorrent to them, for me the chase is half the fun. When I score a hard to find I literally sport wood and do the pee pee dance while waiting for it to arrive. Yes I maybe a bit nuts but that is what makes the world go round.

Absolutely! It is true that if you are willing to be patient and put a little work in, you can easily find what you are after (right now anyway). I bought a few bags of Stonehaven from one B&M a few weeks back. Two weeks later, I decided to cellar some more, and they still had some. I have been looking for the highly recommended Wessex Campaign this week, and already found it in 3 shops, although I only bought from one as I thought the others were priced a bit high.

highplains, a man after my own heart. See how freaking easy it is to get what you want? I have passed on some hard to finds because of price. Freaking Iwan Reis wants over 15 a tin for their BCDF and I wouldn't pay it.

hi, did you try and get him down on the price? I would be surprised if a mom and pop knew how popular that blend really is, or maybe he does and jacked the price.

No, I didn't try to haggle with them. The woman wouldn't even tell me exactly how many they had- "around 3 or 4". But I recently learned my lesson with phone orders from B&Ms- carefully compare prices on all items, and make sure you write down the prices they say. I got nailed for 30.00 more than smokingpipes.com prices, just because I added some items to my order to defray the shipping costs. Ouch.

Actually under capitalism stores get to decide their own policies based on what they feel is the best for themselves and to stay competitive . Forcing a specific policy onto retailers is not a facet of capitalism.

I propose cage matches for the right to buy esoterica tobaccos. That would really be fair. I don't think it's fair to be watching the internet like a hawk and using lightning speed fingers on a smart phone to buy up as much as you can possibly afford.
