Id start there, as its readily available. I like the orientals in QN, and when Im craving a Lat blend its usually the one I go for. Or Gaslight if you are in the mood for a plug.

I think C&D Star of the East is more similar to Penzance than Quiet Nights. However, Quiet Nights is a superb blend all on its own. I might even compare Meridian to Penzance before I would QN. What all of them miss though is the creamy flavor you get from Penzance, at least imho.

Quiet Nights is more like 965 than Gaslight, but I find QN to be a smoother blend than 965. A truly excellent smoke, IMO.
If you enjoy other Pease full bodied English blends you’ll likely enjoy Quiet Nights.
Hoosier is right in that the Pease blends don’t have the creamy mouthfeel of Penzance. They do have the advantage of being readily available.

I don't find 965 similar to any of these. 965 is a more latakia forward blend to me, these other are Balkan blends.
Thanks for the clarification. I prefer latakia to balkan blends, so maybe Penzance isn't going to be for me.
Anyone know of flakes similar to 965?

Have you tried HH Latakia Flake by MacBaren? I have a couple of tins in my cellar that I have not dipped into yet. Im curious to know how it compares to the other blends being discussed here

^ Try it. Then you will know. :). Other than that they all have latakia, not sure about these comparisons. I know that HH Lat is a lot different then Penzance. I prefer the former.

Yes, unfortunately I never found any MacBaren blend that I really liked.
I've never found any English blend beyond 965 and Nightcap that I really like that much.

Sea Captain, when you can find it, try the Ashton Artisan Blend. I think you will find it somewhere in between 965 and Nightcap. GL Pease Charring Cross. It is listed as a Balkan Blend but I don't get much Oriental out of it. It seems more Latakia forward similar to what I get out of 965. With Charring Cross, you might get a bit more of a spicy flavor whereas with 965, I get a bit more sweet flavor and less spice.
It's a bit painful to obtain but the German HU blend Zulu would also likely be something you'd like. I'm not a huge latakia fan so I haven't tried all the latakia forward blends from that blender (but I have them on the way).
If you're a Latakia nut, the SG Squadron Leader might be for you. It is certainly quite popular but it wasn't something I liked. Too much latakia for me.

Michael beat me to it. That's my best answer.

Most of the time when I ask for Stonehaven at my local B&M, they look at me like I just farted on the Pope, but once in a while, I get, "Good timing, this is our last bag..." I'm not sure I really believe it's the last bag, but I don't really care. I'm never looking for multiples, just one will do me for a while.

I ordered a tin of Quiet Nights to compare with 965. And a tin of Union Square also. We'll see how it stacks up to the VA blends I like.

For having tried both, 965 and Quiet Nights are fairly different. Worlds apart, actually.

I agree. ^^^ QN is perique strong, Penz is silky smooth lat and I notice zero perique. Two different animals according to my tatse buds.
Is QN an excellent smoke? Yes. But nothing close to Penz. Both are great but not the same at all.
Maybe ask a member here to gift or sell you a few bowls of Penz to try for yourself?
