Acadian Perique is a great blend! Earlier this year I bought 5 100gram tins dated to 2012, at discount, from my local B&M. They were closing out their pipe tobacco stock, as it doesn't move, and focusing on cigars.

Thank you all for the good suggestions for this first-time into the Va/Per blends. Just ordered some coins of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake 403....(I like the name), and some Elizabethan for possible contrast. I'll eventually try out some other recommended blends.
I can't imagine what I will be tasting with these blends, but excited about the prospects of augmenting my pathetic palate. I can't taste the differences from one blend from another. Maybe it's because I always chose mild, similar blends. I need a good shock to the system. Hope the Va/Per can wake me up.
Now, I wait for the tobaccos to be delivered.
Frank
PS......Thanks for the video links. Love these tutorials. Very informative.

I don't think of LTF as being comparable to Escudo. Love it or hate it, it has a really strong (I'd say "cloying," but I guess that's a matter of taste) caramel topping that seems to me to put it in a totally different class.
Correct, Luxury Twist Flake is different from Escudo, and Luxury Bulls Eye Flake, but it's a similar tobacco that is really good. Just mentioning it as another great tobacco choice. If you're a person that doesn't like Perique then Luxury Twist Flake is a great tobacco to try.

PS Luxury Navy Flake is slightly milder than Escudo and available in bulk.

Nope! Just been crazy busy, my friend! They haven't confined me to jail or taken my internet access just yet!

Hi Frank. Just wanted to tell you not to get too frustrated if you don't get the differences in taste between blends anytime soon. I have only smoked a pipe for 4 1/2 years and only a couple of times a week so it has taken me seemingly forever for my palette to be conditioned to the point of recognizing different flavors. I would take my example as an extreme case and probably not the usual. The more you smoke the quicker you will get adjusted. All that to say if you enjoy the experience don't give up just hang in there. It does get better and you will be rewarded for sticking with it. :puffpipe:

@ davidintexas.....
Thanks for the pep talk. I needed it. Try as I may, I really can't tell the differences between one BLEND from another, and couldn't, even with a gun pointing at my head, tell you what tobaccos were in any given blend. Except any blends smelling of Latakia. I could smell charred, burning leather and feathers, from a mile away.
I gotta laugh! I've recently spent a small fortune buying all sorts of tobaccos, trying them out, hoping to notice any big differences. So far, no go. Cheap OTC tobaccos taste and bite just like the premium, expensive blends. But, I like the the whole ritual, and finally enjoy smoking my pipes. Being a geezer, (tick-tock) whether I learn how to taste all the different tobaccos, or not, makes little difference to me. I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. But trying out different blends can be the fun.
However, I recently tried out a new-for-me, VaPer blend called "Elizabethan-match", and thought it was quite sweet, the flavor reminded reminded me of toasted marshmallows, smooth, and sugary. I liked it, and will smoke it again. Next, ESCUDO trials.

That sounds about like my experience when I first started a pipe (after the tongue blistering train session stage). Funny thing is I didn't realize I was smoking "fast" thought I was going slow, but really I was smoking hot...just slowly lol. Once I really got the hang of how to smoke a pipe is when the different flavor profiles really started to shine. Different tobaccos in different pipes, prepared different ways, and at different moisture levels lol so many variables. Keep at it and it can be very rewarding.

If you really want to mess yourself up, try Dunhill deluxe navy flakes. But it's more expensive than Escudo.

I find Escudo both fresh and aged boring but LBF with 3 or 4 years of age on it is fantastic.
LTF is one of my favs. For me it tastes like vanilla and coconut.
What about something more like Rattray's Marlin Flake or McConnell Scottish Flake?
