Ok, so I order some of this stuff and tried it. I had heard so much about it that I couldn't resist. When opening the tin I was greeted with fruity notes and subtle overtones of tobacco smell. I was pretty stoked even before I smoked it! I let it dry about an hour or so after I broke it into smokable strands. This is one of the most well balanced tobacco's I have smoked. It had the fruitiness throughout the whole bowl, and never burned hot or had any bite. It had something flavor wise I cannot put my finger on but it was good. A keeper I must say. Now maybe some other navy flake? hmmmm

Cygnus, if you want to try another VaPer, I would recommend Solani 633 or H$H Anniversary kake. If you want to branch out and try a VaBur, then try Solani 660 Silver Flake.

Oh man, Anni Kake is a pretty fantastic smoke. I'd say it's my favorite Hearth & Home blend. Sitting on a whooole bunch of it. It's beauty in a bowl. :puffy:

I can`t hold on to this stuff (escudo), I buy 2 tins every time I order from p+c. I always end up opening the 2nd tin before re ordering. for me I also enjoy PS LUXURY BULSLEYE FLAKE. I really wish I could cellar escudo.

Escudo to me is like smoking air I do have a dedicated pipe for it , as to me the intricacies of the blend are very subtle . It is not in my top ten .

cygnus:
That "fruitiness" you're getting is from the perique. It typically adds a peppery spice and a deep fruit (think stewed prunes) quality to a blend.
Unfortunately, I can't smoke it in any but the tiniest quantities without getting a painful physical reaction. But I envy those of you who can enjoy it, because it really does add something special.

cygnusx1, glad to hear you enjoyed Escudo, it is one of my favorites. When I think of Navy Flakes, I think of a flake that is topped with Rum which of course Escudo is not. If you are looking for another Vaper, I highly recommend Solani 633 as peck suggested and also Samuel Gawith St James flake. The St James is a bitch to find but worth the chase. I recommend putting your name on smokingpipes notification list for that one. The Solani is readily available at most of our most of our sponsors. Another way to score St James is to call small mom and pop stores in the low tobacco states.
If you are looking to try a Navy Flake( rum topped) I recommend trying Rotary Navy Cut, Fribourg & Treyer Special Brown Flake or GL Pease Navigator. All three are in my cellar in pretty large numbers.
Kashmir, way to go. I am only at 70 or so tins of Escudo but will be loading up again soon.
