Ernest Hemingway's Pipe...

There has been that, kind of, iconic image of Ernest Hemingway smoking a pipe that I have seen many times. The pipe he is smoking is long and large and is just the kind of pipe that I wanted. A while back while searching for a new pipe I found a Ser Jacopo estate pipe that could be the twin of Ernie's pipe!
I bought it and have what is now known as "My Pipe!" One day it will be known as the Iconic Andy Pipe. (See photo (
I can say that just owning this pipe has increased my grammatical skills immensely.

Okay! You all are correct that is Faulkner... Maybe that's why my grammar is better! However my sentences make less sense.

But Hemingway is awesome, and "The Old Man and the Sea" is my favorite, but I also loved "The Move able Feast," and he wrote in long sentences like this one, despite that in his day, or so I've heard, he was regarded as direct and abrupt, which I never got, but he sure did write good.

Same's true of Faulkner. They both taught me a lot about drinking and language. Miss Eudora did, too.

If you want great simplistic storytelling read a Hemingway novel. If you would like to be challenged, mystified and amazed by the English language and the human condition, read a Faulkner book.
Absalom, Absalom! Is a great place to start.

My understanding of Hemingway was that he was a heavy drinker while Faulkner was a binge drinker (according to the 2-volume biography by Joseph Blotner). When Faulkner drank there was no stopping him, and by the time he stopped, days later, his health was seriously undermined.

Hemingway may have owned a pipe, but I can't remember seeing him pictured with one. As noted above, the man in the photo is definitely William Faulkner. He wrote movies for a while in Hollywood. He asked his boss, a producer I think, if he could write at home, and the producer said that would be okay, so Faulkner went back to Mississippi. My late wife, an English prof, taught one of his relatives at St. Mary's College in Raleigh, N.C., and they just knew him as granpa or uncle, or whatever he was to them.

Not even remotely trying to be harsh on OP, but this comment had me in hysterical laughter. Regardless, OP, can't go wrong with either of the two greats in Faulkner and Hemmingway!

Hemingway's simplistic stories for me, please. He made mundane daily affairs seem marvelous and meaningful. He was a genius.
