Finally took the risk & bought my first tin (Nutty Cut) instead of just purchasing bulk samples. I love it & now have my eye on a tin of Erinmore- based on a sniff from my local shop. They only offer a large tin- so I'm going to purchase a smaller one online.
I'm noticing there are 2 types I'm interested in: "Mixture" and "Flake".
Can anyone explain the difference or suggest either?

Mixture is a loose tobacco, the flake is a pressed cake that has been sliced into strips. You must prepare flake tobacco to smoke, either using a fold and stuff method, "running out" the flake, or cutting it with a knife. The mixture is ready to go. Erinmore is great stuff either way, but the flake is bolder, IMHO.

And, in my humble opinion, as a new pipe smoker (me, not necessarily you), I find flakes really hard to smoke. I have tried a lot of different methods, but I find loose cut tobacco much more forgiving of the smoker's packing, lighting and tamping ability.

I have had both the flake and loose cut and preferred the flake. I use the cube method to prepare it and it is a joy to smoke.

I love Erinmore Flake.

Cutting, using scissors is my preferred method of preparation.

I think you'll like it very much... Don't forget to let it dry a bit before you load your pipe.

I've heard that the mixture has the stronger fruit casing, while the flake is more complex and a tad stronger.
Cutting my flakes into cubes completely changed my outlook on them; you can also rub them out or fold and stuff them but the latter is a pain to light and keep burning.

Bob Tate, he used to work with PM and was a regular poster in the thousands. He did a whack of reviews back in the early days. I don't know if he still has an account or not - nickname was Python.

I love Erinmore, fruity taste mellow smoke, first of the year I bought Dunhill Flake and Erinmore IMHO Dunhill is about making your pipe smoke , not a lot of flavor mild but not something that sticks with you, but every time I"ve smoked Erinmore I come away more and more satisfied, love it. The old cajun. PS I smoke the Flake
