Enlighten me on C&D and GLP

With the "consolidation" of tobacco companies I've either witnessed for the first time actively with STG, or have read about from history with McClelland, what has always seemed relatively consistent is people saying they could always fall back on C&D and/or GLP if all else fails.

I have never tried a single blend from either company. From my observations, it seems people only bring up C&D when it's time for a limited release drop, or GLP for an aromatic. There doesn't seem to be as much fanfare around their standard offerings as many other companies/blends have, and I feel I must be missing something with these companies being as established as they are. So, what's the deal with C&D and GLP?

GLP has far more than just aromatics. And C&D has far more to offer than thier limited drops. Both have good blends in many styles. And I'm pretty sure GLP is actually all blended by C&D these days.

They make a fine product. Some dismiss them as they don’t have as much historic panache some of the older branded tins. A lot of my “5 Star” ratings come from them. Favorites include GLP Telegraph Hill, Westminster, Triple Play, C&D Bayou Morning Ribbon, Three Friars, Oak Alley, Oriental Silk etc. The list goes on.

They are pretty much all I buy and smoke for the past few years. One may find their blends harsh at first if you aren't used to the style so keep that in mind.

I don't associate GLP with aromatics but rather English and Balkan styles. Blackpoint, Westminster and Maltese Falcon are all excellent blends. For VaPer and Va Telegraph Hill and Union Square are solid. GLP blends are manufactured by C&D.

C&D makes a lot of good blends as well. I've been smoking through several of their standard VaPer offerings lately and really like Chenet's Cake and Kajun Kake. A lot of their blends are really solid.

A lot of their mixtures are completely uncased. Coming from highly cased tobacco, one might think C&D tastes off. But actually, that is what real tobacco taste like.

Oh and you aren’t paying for half water, you get way more tobacco for your money.

I enjoy both offerings from both companies. GLP makes some great English and Balkan blends but their Virginia series' shouldn't be looked over. I'm a big big fan of his Cumberland blend personally. I didnt even know GLP made aromatics.

C&D has a large offering and that can seem intimidating but I'd just get something that sounds tasty to you and try it, I love Pegasus, Old Joe Krantz, Haunted Bookshop and recently Oriental Silk. Once you find something you like from them they make it easy to cellar deep.

C & D has been around for over 30 years. They have something like 150 blends under their own name plus they blend for a lot of labels including GLP.

In general, what do you like to smoke? We can suggest some blends to try from lines produced by C&D.

If you're a burley fan, C & D has some classic offerings, and GLP is pretty well acknowledged as one of the best blenders of English styles. check out reviews and try a couple!

GLP makes awesome VaPers and dark strong blends, and while I’m not an English/Latakia/oriental fan I know many respect his blending of those. Greg Pease isn’t even something that comes to mind when I think of aromatics.
If you look at the “What Are You Smoking” threads, you’ll see a quite a lot of C&D gets burned by the membership here.

Greg isn't known for aromatics. I can't think of one he's released. The GL Pease offerings are mostly English blends, Virginia Periques, and Virginia blends.
They are good blends.
C&D has a lot of fans. They're almost the last man standing. And there are also smaller blenders, like Wilke, and The Country Squire that are worth a look.

He has the one aromatic that he collaborated with GH on, Stonehenge. He has gently used liquor on a couple of others, but yeh, Greg is known for adding nothing but tobacco to his blends, all natural flavors. Except for the ones noted, but in those instances, he was doing something very unique.

to the OP... If you have not seen discussions about C&D, that is on you. I would attest that C&D are the most discussed here. Otherwise, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Ha ha. It may be the STD taking over some other brands has overwhelmed your attention.

Yeh, I don't think of the Two Friends line as being the same thing as Greg's GLP blends. But, well noted.

I didn't even know Greg made an aromatic until this thread.
I don't know how you don't hear about C&D that much.
It's probably the most talked about blending house on the internet. They definitely have the most blends.
One reason might be that many of us just refer to C&D blends as the blend name but not the blender, assuming everyone knows.
Most replies just say "Haunted Bookshop", "Star of the East", "Pegasus".....
In my experience, every single "what should I try" thread has mostly C&D suggestions.
If it hadn't been said yet, C&D blends and tins blends for GLP, that is their connection.

What's the deal with C&D/GLP being people's fall back from McClelland closing? Well there are a couple of blends that share more than just vague similarities with a couple of popular McClelland blends.

What's up with C&D's non limited run blends? They're just as good, if not better, just stripped of the marketing mystique around it.

As for GLP, they definitely have a 'house flavor' to their tobacco but they are so much more than 'just aromatics' just off the top of my head Telegraph Hill, Pennyfarthing are top very popular vapers.

Yes. You are missing something.
In fact, a Pipes Magazine forum member such as yourself would have to really try hard to avoid reading about either blender to not at least be somewhat aware of what they do.

Both blenders are represented, literally every single day, often with multiple listings, on SP.com list of best selling tinned tobaccos.
GLP Quiet Nights is one of the most popular English/Latakia blends currently made. It is not an aromatic.

You should buy some blends by both houses if you’re curious.
If money is tight, which I totally get, start with bulk C&D blends.
Just dive in. You’ll get your bearings soon enough.
