Enjoying Latakia?

I like Latakia, but in most blends it drowns the other tobaccos out for me too, unless it is also heavy on Orientals like Durbar or Peretti Royal. Certain light blends such as Presbyterian, John Cotton No. 1 and McConnell Oriental use Latakia with a very light hand, and allow the other tobaccos to be tasted, with the latakia only adding light smoke and leather.

Yeah, everyone is different. I personally love latakia because of that campfire smell. It's what kept me into pipes in the first place. I've only recently begun to enjoy straight Virginia, especially flake. But the latakia will always call me home later.

I personally love latakia blends. I also love Thai cuisine. But that doesn't mean the guy standing next to me will. Everybody's palate is different. My palate is not all that refined. I've suffered from sinus and allergy issues my entire life. There are certain subtleties in flavor and aroma I just can't pick up on very well. That's why I tend to gravitate to foods, wines and tobacco blends that are more robust. Thai food, red Zinfandels, latakia blends, and Va/Pers that are heavier on the perique are more to my liking. That said, latakia heavy blends like Nightcap are only a once in awhile smoke for me. For my taste buds I've found a happy balance in MM 965 and Balkan Sasieni.

Yeah, I wouldn't give up on lat blends entirely, but don't feel pressured to continue smoking / buying things that you don't enjoy!
I am similar to you: I find that latakia hides the other players in a blend rather than helping to bring them out, which I feel perique does wonderfully. That said, I still enjoy latakia blends from time to time.

Me too. I've tried several blends and I just don't like it. I agree that you should try some lighter blends. If nothing clicks, there's only about 729,267 non Latakia blends out there to try
