I've been wondering why the preponderance of flakes are VA's and VaPers? I know there are some English flakes, but they seem much less prevalent. Anyone have agues as to why this is? Or is my impression off base?

I don’t know why but the English flakes that I do have are very tasty. Right now I am enjoying a local English blend (Jerri’s Autumn Bairn) and was just thinking how I wish this came in a flake or a rope.

I wonder if it's as simple as the practice becoming common at a time when Latakia and Turkish tobaccos were less prevalent in Western Europe, or perhaps were less favored by sailors (for taste, or cost or whatever reasons) and others for whom pressed tobaccos were initially designed? Interesting question.

They're out there.....just not in abundance. The simpliest answer is supply and demand. I would guess most English/Lat smokers enjoy the normal ribbon and such cuts.

The beauty of being a random buyer of blends is that I did not realize I had many of these in my cellar/big plastic bin! RM Latakia Flake is coming out tonight!

How is that McConnell Latakia Flake?
I myself dont smoke that vile latakia stuff, but guys in my pipe club seem to deride this particular blend. Something about a casing or top note that isnt complimentary or palatable.

English Flakes...I've met a few of those in my life in the horse breeding business...far nicer bunch than the French Flakes I've met...

bluegrass: My understanding is it's a pretty rare bird in the sense that it has a unique topping and is a Latakia blend with some nicotine pop. I can understand why people would not be interested in that, but I also see it has some followers as well. Personally, I am keen to try it.

I'll go ahead and say this publicly. Can't believe I'm doing this, but here goes.
My #1 tobacco (all time, best ever, my precious) is Sillem's Commodore Flake. A few people know this privately, but now the cat is out of the bag. If my house was burning down, I would grab it first out the door.
And I'll go ahead and say this publicly:
McConnell's Latakia Flake is the same blend! Oops, there it is. No he didn't! You say what?!?
So there you have it. One of my best kept secrets released to the masses. Oh well, I'm deeply stocked on both blends now. Have it chaps.

McConnell Latakia Flake certainly is on the short list for me. But I haven't opened my Brebbia Latakia Flake or HH Latakia Flakes yet. For some reason McConnell's Latakia Flake hits me hard with the nic, but I think that was because I was smoking it too moist and having to puff hard just to keep it lit.
