Sounds like one of the many rather generic made in England pipes that used to be very common. From the description I am guessing it's a Canadian style.

Canadian or lovat perhaps. Is the stem tapered or saddle, and is the shank round or oval?

did give that pipe a second chance and thanks to the varities of sutliff, like the pipe much much better now.
