I'm intrigued by emojis as a kind of reverting to hieroglyphs and giving a visual aspect to the written word. I guess they arrived just as graphic novels emerged as more than children's books. I can't decide if emojis mostly add a dimension or decline to a primitive level. I have the same reaction to street graffiti. Some are remarkably expressive, and others just seem like ordinary vandalism. If people did drawings themselves, that might reveal quite a bit in terms of expression ... for worse or better.

I just read that the current generation thinks leaving a smile face is “Colossally insulting in every conceivable way.” We’ve come a long way from Forest Gump.

Emojis are for current generation of keyboard illiterates who can not simply type out stupid face expressions using :, ;, ), and so on. Or excuse for someone like me who couldn't bother to understand them.

An aunt sent a close friend condolences on the passing of her friend's husband.
She was most embarrassed and horrified when she was told that "LOL" stood for ""Laugh Out Loud" and not "Lots Of Love" ?

I just chose the picture thingy from the list you get when you click on the smiley face above the textbox. We had all agreed at one time that Puffy, the pipesmoking picture thingy, would represent a pipesmoker’s sarcasm. But, of course we don’t tell the newbies this, amd many people don’t know when I am sacrastic… which has made for some interesting flame outs by simple minds thinking I am being serious.
