I have this tobacco my shop just recently started selling called fox & hound. Apparently way back when there was a tinderbox here it was a big seller with the regulars. Honestly it's ok, but I can only take so much of it. To me it has the taste and air of a saddle wood candle my wife has. On that note I tried to like scotch, but prefer a good Tenn whiskey instead.

That's another cool thing about this forum as opposed to other pipe communities. No one looks down their nose at you if you say you like 1Q or some other blend. I can't stand a pipe snob.
Try going over to some other sites and and brag that you like 1Q. They'll take you over to the couch in another room with the "undesirables" like Pinto and Flounder when they visited the Omega House.

Heh, Adam. That's actually going to be written into our new pipe club's rules: no snobbery. Everyone and everything is accepted without complaint.

Well, I mean I understand the snob thing. If I was a pipe carver making six-figures a year carving high-grade pipes, I would probably be a little put off by Dr Grabow & 1Q smokers. It's just part of the deal, like if this was a car collectors club and we were riding around in Ford Focuses while everyone else was driving a 1966 Mustang Convertible. I can see where they're coming from.
But it doesn't have to be that way. My dad smoked a pipe, and he never owned a $5000 Chonowitsch bamboo. In fact, he only smoked three pipes his whole life and they were trashy. But he got by just fine and enjoyed himself thank you very much.
The whole pipe snob thing is overrated.

Hell, I love cars and was raised building hot rods. The first car I "drove" was a brand new Camaro when I was 5 years old. But I understand not everyone is into cars as a hobby - some folks drive Focuses to get them from point A to point B without costing a ton of money. Now, I do give them a slight side eye if they drive the version where the wheels would just randomly fall off. I do look down on certain cars, but the choice of ride is not going to affect how I feel about a person.
So when it comes to pipes, I'm the same way. I do believe that a slightly more expensive will give you a better smoking experience - that's just my opinion. Other folks are satisfied with their cobs and Dr. G's and prefer to spend their money elsewhere. Being a pipe smoker is already rare enough - we don't need further divisions in our community.

This is another hobby of mine I quite enjoy. But the thing I've noticed is, there are a god awful lot of pipe smoking snobs out there. These are the pipe smokers you need to avoid if you're just taking up this age old tradition. If you check blogs, YouTube, online magazines, etc., they always tend to favor the most expensive pipes and tobaccos. Pipe smoking is cheap. It's as expensive as you want to make it. When you start pipe smoking, you don't need to get an $90 pipe, $15 for 1 oz of tobacco, or pay $40 for a pipe tamper. That's insane. Here's what I enjoy, and prefer, personally.
1. Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Pipes: They're extremely affordable, are not porous, can hold a smoke for 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the bowl, and can be easily replaced.
2. Clay Pipes: Even cheaper, are not porous, and have no cool down time. They are fragile, however, so be careful.
3. Blenders Gold or Sutliff Private Stock: Drugstore type tobaccos. They are extremely cool smokes, stay lit, and aren't very expensive. I also like Captain Black and Borkum Riff, but those are a bit expensive.
4. Pipe tool: These things range from free to $6, and include a reamer, poker, and tamper all-in-one.
5. Castleford Pipe Pouch: $6 on Amazon, and includes pipe tool and moisture pouch. The 4 pipe one is $30, but well worth the price.
Like any other hobby, it's as expensive as you want to make it.

(If I use "dig" as in "I dig smoking" in another post please ban me for a month)

I think it's hip to say you dig sumthin'! I do it all the time... my kids say I'm not hip! Actually they don't, Hip isn't in their lexicon either! Sadly, "cool" seems to be fading too... Also, in truth, I am neither hip or cool, but I can dig it. 8)

For every hobby there will be snobbery. It is as constant as the northern star.
As my father says, joke 'em if they can't take a &^%k
But we should be appreciative that we are not a community of snobs. And for that, we're fortunate.

...index fingers even cheaper. Usually sold in pairs!

wildcat - I did that the other day in a pinch and BURNED MY FINGERNAIL. And I have real nails - no acrylic up in here. WTF?
I just buy tampers from y'all creative people on this site and put one at every place I tend to sit down and smoke. Keeps me from fragging my manicure. ;)

@cyndi: By drop the 'Future' Pipe Babe, I meant you're a Babe now. Nothing to do with the photo shoots.
@adam12: You have a quote: "If I was a pipe carver making six-figures a year carving high-grade pipes, I would probably be a little put off by Dr Grabow & 1Q smokers.' I don't think that's true; I think you would be one of the most understanding and generous six-figure pipe carvers out there.
By 'accomodating' and 'understanding', I don't mean you should sacrifice your values and morals to get along; be unswavering in those, just don't force what you believe on others. If they want some of what you've got, they'll ask you; otherwise, keep your damn mouth shut.

Cyndi, LOL!, manicures not an issue with me! I too have tampers around in different spots (prolly cuz I forgot 'em there truth to tell!) But the index finger usually comes into play while driving or doing something that I'm too involved to stop etc. Hope your nail heals hon! By the by, you ARE a pipe babe, nuthin' future about it!

Hey Simnett,
I love Sutliff's Maple Street! Sure, I only have it once in awhile and, sure, it smells like a stack of pancakes with a quart of maple syrup on them, but hey, who doesn't like pancakes?! In other words, chicks dig it!
Smoke what you love and love what you smoke!

At 47, I am an "ol' Codger!" Its a state of mind for me. Give me affordable pipes, affordable OTC tobacco and the space to enjoy 'em in. I don't try to be a "reverse-snob" either!
Like in the world of backyard custom bikes, "Chop what ya got!" Well, smoke what ya got and smoke what ya like. It's all good.
Remember what Sheryl Crow sang in Soak Up The Sun ... It's not having what you want. It's wanting what you've got.
By the way, while I will most likely never purchase a new Dunhill or some such(not a question of being able to afford, again, just a state of mind for me), I would gladly puff away on one if someone wants to share!!
It's all good.

I saw a tv ad for AXE cologne that promises similar results.

There couldn't be anything more nasty than that stuff. I mean you're like the Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant when you spray that on you. And the only woman I can think of that would dig it is Snooki.
You bunch of deodorant snobs !

You know I have found that snobbery exists in 2 of my favorite hobbies, firearms and pipes. On the firearms front my favorite moment was at a local range when a fellow with with a 3000 dollar custom built rifle wearing a 1000 dollar ziess sneered and made fun of my 200 dollar enfield with iron sights. He had loads to tell me about how superior his rig was and how accurate etc etc. After we walked out for the target change he wouldnt even look at me for the rest of the day. On the pipe front I have run into a few who poo ppoed and poked fun at some of my recent purchases because it wasnt a blah blah hand carved by some dude with a hard to pronounce name. I usually dont even bother explaining that in my collection of now 83 pipes I have everything from savinelli to a missouri meerschaum ozark miniature. I smoke what I like and shoot what I like the snobs can sit around a jibber jab how they like but lets face it folks its a stick for burning tobacco. Buy what you like and smoke what you like.
p.s. prat you got me all curious about chics dig it, feel like a little trading?

Life, I've seen a good hunk of 'em. Very nice! If the poopoo of folks evr troubles you, I will take all off your hands so you can sleep better!
As to your notes on snobs in various hobbies/lifestyles: My son is an MMA aspiring fighter. He just loves knocking the stuffing out of guys that will only buy this brand or that brand equipment and smirk at his equipment!
