You’re talking about the Eltang Basic and the Eltang Magic. They’re not the same pipe. The Basic has a mouthpiece and is larger than the Magic. I have a Basic and it’s a small pipe. I don’t smoke it much for that reason. The Magic is quite a bit smaller. I can’t imagine owning one unless you’re looking for a 15 minute smoke.

I have two basic, one of which I bought from the Danish pipe shop and has popeye on the bottom. Can't remember why I bought it as i already had an actual Eltang rusticated poker. I think at the time i was very enamored of the Eltang poker. Honestly, while i like the aesthetic of the real poker and thought I would like the basic, i rarely smoke any of them. Sort of "meh" really and all very agressively priced. No understanding, by the way, why anyone would want to spend that amount of money for a pipe without a mouthpiece. The magic may be in getting people to open their wallet.

I think these pipes are esthetically pleasing and its all about the extreme side of Danish minimalist design. I want a basic, because I do want a shorter smoke at times, and again, I think its a great looking pipe. What I don't want is the bowl coating.

I've emailed Eltang and they said they would do them without coating, only at the retailers request. So now I'm waiting on SP to work it out with Eltang.

I'll be honest (dont want to derail) there are great pipes at some great price points by pipe makers on IG that I cant stop buying from. I do want to get a few more main stream production pipes though and the Basic is one of them.

I have a couple of Basics. I just got another. Only you can decide if they are priced appropriately for you, but I think they are fantastic. My pipes are all users and have ranged from MM cobs (love them) up through some fairly big name Danish guys (love them too) and a bunch of production and handmade pipes in between. There are times when I'm goofing off with the dogs in the back yard, or fishing, or mowing the lawn, or just having a quick smoke, when I'm not comfortable smoking really nice pipes. Some people are, and that's great. I used my cobs fairly often and it bothered me that some of my more expensive pipes weren't getting used often enough. The Basic has replaced all of my production and "mid grade" handmade pipes. I smoke them almost daily. They are as light as any pipe I've owned, durable, and they feel high quality. They are small, for better or worse. I agree about the bowl coating -- they give off a bizarre smell until they are broken in. I don't think it's the briar or the stains because my other Eltang pipes do not ever give off a similar smell.

Have two Basics so far.
Worth the price? I think so.
They smoke better than my Stanwells and I love the minimalistic design.
Very well balanced pipes with no fuss.

Now the Magics.
Don't think I would find them comfortable.

Eltang cheapened his name with these basics and with his entire Sarah Eltang line of pipes. I don't see Former or any of the highline Danish guys creating these cheaper lines. I had always wanted an Eltang Dublin with a great contrast stain. Now forget it, his prices are now a joke since he went to making cheap lines of pipes.

Interesting take. Watching the websites, it certainly seems like all three lines seem to sell quickly. It doesn't appear to have hurt the sales of Bay or Rasmussen either.

I ended up doing a "both/and". The Magic, for sure, takes some getting used to, chomping on a shank, no bathroom humor please, but is adaptable and draws well for this newbie, its my first pipe better than $15... I'm awaiting it's city cousin, the basic.
