Id suggest Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. Always going to be there (hopefully) and its probably in the ballpark of what you are looking for.
I've been smoking this for the past week. For me it's disgustingly sweet and doesn't have nearly enough perique. I think I might try stoving it.

Also, I forgot to add Haunted Bookshop is a completely different blend; however it scratches the same itch as Elizabethan for me for some reason. I have no idea why, as the flavors are very different; it's burley based not Virginia. You might get a couple ounces in bulk and give it a shot.
I have been thinking about haunted bookshop as well as Stratford! Is haunted bookshop sweet?

No, I'd say it's probably one of the most aptly named blends for the flavor you're going to get. It's pretty musty, spicy, dark, and earthy. Sometimes the Virginia and Perique pop up and you get a little sweetness and dark fruit flavor; but mostly it tastes like dirt and mushrooms...in a good way though!

This sounds great actually and I understand from your descriptions and the reviews I am reading how this might scratch that itch.

I also love Elizabethan Mixture. The only ones I have experience with are the Dunhill/Peterson versions. I wasn't smoking a pipe back when it was Murray's.

Early on in my pipe smoking money was tight and I tried Sutliff's match, hoping to save money and always have it. I decided to order 2 oz to make sure I liked it before ordering more and was glad I did. I don't recall the flavor or why, but I remember I didn't like it.

I would recommend trying some bulk C&D VaPers and see if you can find something you like as much.
I also 2nd trying Haunted Bookshop, even though it's nothing like EM.

Yup you called it.
Guess my older aged Victorian tasted better than this newer “Elizabethan match” 😫

Don't leave it in those bags for too long. Eventually the moisture will escape through the Mylar and the contents will dry out. For long term storage, either jar in small jars so that you only open up what you want to use, or small food grade metallized gusseted Mylar bags.

Yeah it’s in Mylar bags. Just took it out of Mylar to see wtf I actually bought.
It was around the time I got in 20 pounds of tobacco so didn’t pay attention to some of the details it seems.

They smoked differently to me. Going to make me break them both back out and compare them.
TobaccoPipesCom lists “Elizabethan Match”, but when it’s bought it’s a one pound bag with a Sutliff “Match Victorian” label.

The OP specified Elizabethan Mixture, which means to me the Peterson/STG tinned product, which is not the bulk stuff and tastes completely different.

I’d love to see a pic of a bulk bag of Elizabethan Match-Sutliff called the Match Victorian such years back I hear, and if you have some it is the same stuff as Match Victorian but it’s been sitting in someone’s inventory for a few years at least.

Yeah haha I think there was probably a misunderstanding in thread title. That being said I think it would be great if people gave ideas for how to mame sutliffs victorian match as I am sure a lot of people are going to be missing that.

The OP also asked for less expensive alternatives.
Yup, my comment was to Brad regarding the difference in taste between the Elizabethan and Sutliff’s Match with a side reference to the Elizabethan Match/Match Victorian name change that some sellers (TPcom being Sutliff’s shop) still refer to the latter being the former.
And also I was pointing out that under neither name does the “Match” taste like the STG/Peterson Elizabethan Mixture.
As to a less expensive alternative to the Elizabethan mixture I didn’t directly comment because I don’t like it, so I haven’t an alternative😉

Looking back I can see how my post was clear as mud…

Hi,
This is my first post but I’ve been reading the forum for a few months. My favorite tobacco is elizabethan mixture. However, I am a college student (and cheapskate) and really can’t afford to spend as much as I would if I smoked that mixture regularly. I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to how I might blend something similar myself. My apologies if there is already a thread on this I’ve looked through a whole bunch of them but couldn’t find anything. I should also note the things I love about the mixture are the spiciness, breadiness, and mechanics.
Excited to be here,
Richard
Have a look at fairtradetobacco.com. Search Elizabethan or go through the threads on whole leaf pipe blends.

It’ll be trial and error, for sure.

Here’s a fun little chart, speaking of replacing things that are irreplaceable.

I don’t know how long the link will be live with the pending demise of TPcom:

I remember when this first appeared on the Sutliff site.

I’m a big fan of Elizabethan Mixture too. I will continue to stock up on it. I also love saving money like everyone else and for me, that means bulk tobacco. I shop almost exclusively with SP.com and favor ribbon cuts. SP.com doesn’t offer a lot of options within those parameters. Victorian match which I don’t like is one option. Bayou Morning and Exclusive, which I do like and smoke them when I want the extra Perique. So I’m currently working with bulk Bayou Morning with added bulk Yorktown or Low Country’s Natural Virginia bulk to tone down the Bayou Morning to more Elizabethan levels. The jury is still out on how effective this will be but so far so good and it’s kind of fun to experiment.
