Hi,
This is my first post but I’ve been reading the forum for a few months. My favorite tobacco is elizabethan mixture. However, I am a college student (and cheapskate) and really can’t afford to spend as much as I would if I smoked that mixture regularly. I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to how I might blend something similar myself. My apologies if there is already a thread on this I’ve looked through a whole bunch of them but couldn’t find anything. I should also note the things I love about the mixture are the spiciness, breadiness, and mechanics.
Excited to be here,
Richard

Bringham has one called Tudor Mix, but I haven't seen it in a long while. Actually, I could name a few more like Victorian Mixture and Regents Street, but they may be very hard to find and wouldn't save you much money. I assume that since Hearth and Home and Sutliff are tits up, that their match blends are all gone now.

There are tons of great Vapers out there, but from what you say you liked about EM, you might like C&D's Virginia Flakes. Doesn't have perique, but it's very bready with hints of spices. It is a pure, non cased Virginia.

Maybe other might suggest something, but since the Vikings are slaughtering the market, new smokers that didn't stock up are the ones screwed the hardest.

Not a match, but I just saw this thread in the recent discussions regarding best Vapers that might be of some help:

I picked up 3 pounds of the Eliz Match due to the closing of Sutliff, wasn't a fan =[ felt like a let down to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to smoke it over the years, but I think Victorian Mixture is probably better (don't know about cheaper).

Jar it and let it sit for a year. For me it changed a lot and I enjoy it. Fresh I didn’t care for it.

I got it sitting in the sealed bags it came in, then placed them into mylar. Would that help it to change enough? Or does it require being in a mason jar to fully experience the change?

Good, I was wondering if my taste buds on this were off. I picked up a few pounds back a few years ago, and was wondering what the big deal was. I could tick off half a dozen that I liked better. You don't hear people go against the flow on these "most talked about" blends very often. I agree... it's ok, and I might come back to them in a few years and give them another try.

Id suggest Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake. Always going to be there (hopefully) and its probably in the ballpark of what you are looking for.

JimInks is a huge fan of Victorian/Elizabethan.

To me, it's solid for what it is, but not my absolute favorite kind of VaPer. I prefer reds like McC 2015, figgy darks like Salty Dogs or Dark Flake, or browns if they've got some sweet-stewy-ness.

It's been a long time since I tried it, but as I recall, Elizabethan had more yellow than I prefer -- too much dry grass and wood -- not much sweetness, and the perique seemed more it's own element, rather than an enhancer for the VAs (which is what I prefer).

But since it's been so loved, I'll pull out the jar sometime soon and revisit it. Maybe my opinion will have changed.

About 3 weeks ago, I saw a site selling both in bulk.
Sutliff's Elizabethan Match was renamed Match Victorian a number of years ago, so I don't know what the other Elizabethan Match you saw was, unless it was either old stock or an error. The Sutliff version was based on the Murray's version, which is a different balance than the STD version.

I've got a couple of pounds of Match Victorian that's about 6-7 years old. I haven't smoked it in years and will give it a revisit. I also have a tin of the Murray's. Might make for an interesting experiment to see how much they resemble each other, though the effects of aging will cause some differences.
Like you, I prefer 2015 and other Va/Pers like GP11 from Russ' Perique series, as well as D&R Rimboché AP and SJ, as well as several GL Pease offerings. They're all good, just different approaches to the genre.

Can’t give you an honest answer for that as I’ve never used Mylar before. I assume it would age similarly.

I'm a fan of the STG Elizabethan as well as the sutliff match(very different flavors IMHO). For something a bit cheaper that might ring the same bells as the STG, you might save a few bucks buying the 8oz tins of GL Pease Stratford or Telegraph Hill, which are similar in cut and flavor (Stratford is a bit sweet though). Lizzy is pretty unique, it's relatively dry(flavor not moisture) for a va/per, not nearly as sweet as others. It also has a very pleasant nicotine content, which I don't find in many other va/pers. I haven't found anything offered in bulk that's similar to it flavor wise.

Also, I forgot to add Haunted Bookshop is a completely different blend; however it scratches the same itch as Elizabethan for me for some reason. I have no idea why, as the flavors are very different; it's burley based not Virginia. You might get a couple ounces in bulk and give it a shot.
