I hope you get well soon.
Don't give up on the mountain biking. Maybe just dial it back a notch. I'm in my late 40's and I see plenty of guys older than me mountain biking where I ride at my local town park. Although I gotta say the downhills are a hell of a lot more fun than up. I had an older guy pass me on an uphill recently and that just knocked me on my ass. lol

Yikes! I'm guessing you were wearing a helmet. I learned my lesson on a Hardrock (still have it) riding in the mountains of Western MD, over my head with some pretty experienced single-track guys. I got launched over the bike, landed and skidded on my head, enough to wear off about 1/2" of helmet material (fast downhill, gravel). That cured me of the rough stuff, now we ride the tame C&O canal!
I hope you heal fast!

Thanks Al, Yep, I always wear a helmet.

This is my Hardrock, love it, love it. I have yet to ever go over the handlebars, but I have gone sideways down steep gravel trails, and it has tried to prison rape me several times.

This is my new touring bike. The wife and I went with the Rolls, because we could ride more upright to take in the view. I hate riding with my nose on the handlebars, while the beautiful scenery passes me by. Oh, and check out the Brooks saddle. Brooks has been the top notch saddles for so long that Orville and Wilbur even used them on their first airplane designs. I need to get a picture of the tourer with full panniers loaded for bike-packing.

I made a lot of upgrades on the HardRock. This picture was also before the new deivetrane and seat dropper. I love the seat post drop, no more unwelcome down hill butt rapes, ha ha. And, I can lean my weight way back over the back tire.

I highly recommend Brooks seats. I have to bring it inside after every ride, butt it's very comfortable on really long tours.

Wow Michael be careful out there. Glad to hear it was just a pulled muscle. Even at 45, I learned that I am not able to bounce back like I used to. Still nursing a possibly slightly torn rotator cuff in my shoulder after trying to throw a niece in the pool back in June.

Happy surprise at the end with the issue not being heart related. I thought we'd be seeing a lot less of you around here. I took my 20 year old dusty Klein out a few months ago and things were not quite like I remember. Skills need to be relearned I guess. The whole trail ride was a bit strange.

Buckaroo, ride through an area till you've learned it like a video game. Know where each turn and trick can be made, bunny hops over rocks and logs, then work in a few jumps, and know where the loose spoil is. I didnt memorize the loose gravel and soil before I made my jump. That was my downfall. I've been scoping that trail out all summer, six miles of nice ups and downs with some nice switbacks coming down the gas and powerl lines. I'm just glad I wasn't on them when they exploded today.
If you only know one skill on a mt bike, the bunny hop is it. It'll make it so that you never have to get off your bike or stop for obstacles. Plus, its the first stage of a good jump.
