We paid $5 per dozen and for a while we were buying 2 dozen eggs every 2 weeks on a schedule from someone until their chickens were likely eaten when they went on vacation. It was great as they were all collected that morning as we had a standing agreement.

$6 is where I top out but even then wouldn't be a regular purchase.

Yep. Chicken.

That's a relief.

If it was local and I trusted the source, I'd pay the same price I've been paying at the store for "free range" eggs...I'm willing to pay a little more to not support the big torture chamber chicken farms. Typically it's been anywhere from $5 on sale to over $7 at times...per dz. I'd rather the local guy got the profit.

I have chickens and ducks. Lots of chickens and ducks. In W. Tennessee, it seems like everyone does. As a result, eggs seldom sold for more than $1.50 a dozen until 18 months ago. Then they bumped up to $2.50. I imagine they are now at a level where I should toss my eggs on the market, but it is a hassle trying to market them.

I use my extra eggs to boost protein for my LGDs/ Pigs/ and back into the poultry. I also have started freeze drying some.

As a hobby chickens are fun. I check my girls in the morning, let them out, and then once again in the afternoon, I check for eggs, then of evening I shut them up.

They have scratch in cold weather, always clean, fresh water, and calcium shell and gravel, and the best 16% protein crumble feed, all they want.

One of my girls lays almost every day, another every day or two, and one every few days. I get around a dozen eggs a week.

Missouri’s minimum wage is $13.75 an hour, or $110 a day.

At fifty cents an egg that’s almost five dozen eggs a day, which you’d have to keep over sixty good layers, seventy or eighty most likely.

Store bought eggs are the best bargain in the grocery store.

My father’s mother died of cancer the month after I turned two, and if she somehow walked through the door today I’d run to her crying Mammy.:)

Do not ever say or do one thing around a toddler you don’t want them to remember when they too, are old and gray.

In my time, Mammy only keep about a half dozen layers in a chicken barn large enough for three gross (432).

The reason why, was the goal was to produce a case of 30 dozen (360) eggs a day that always sold for 25 cents a dozen and sometimes as much as 40 cents.

My Mammy quit selling eggs when huge commercial barns drove the retail price of eggs down from sixty to eighty cents a dozen to forty cents a dozen, year round, and all the little egg buying stations shut down.

But when selling eggs was profitable it kept up the household, it would be over a hundred dollars a day today.
