Yes times do change. Our parents and grand parents probably said the same things about us when we were young. However, the one difference between then and now is respect. Why would a young person respect their job and their customers when they don't respect their parents, their teachers, or themselves. Sorry, but if you have orange hair, and earrings the size of batteries hanging from ear lobes, your lips, and your nose, you don't have respect for yourself.
I see the non-respect from kids all of the time. I teach Drivers Ed part time. The kids are in the car with me and when they are I see the disrespect for me, (but I put an end to that crap in hurry), how they talk about their parents, and their teachers. I also travel the country talking to high school aged kids. I don't care if I'm in Ca, NY, Ohio, or east bumf--k, the disrespect is equal.
I have students 16 years old saying to me. "Frank, when I pass my road test my parents are buying me a new Range Rover, or Mustang, or Grand Cherokee. When I tell them my first car I bought and it was a 1955 chevy for $150, they ask me. Why didn't your parent buy you one?"
I blame a lot of this on the parents. Kids in school get away with too much. Teachers hands are tied because of PC, and regulations. And then parents blame the teachers when their babies are out of control. Back in the day, if I disrespected a teacher, I would get it from the teacher, then the mean ass principal, and then my Marine father.
By the time I started my first job, respecting myself and others was now the normal thing to do.
