Edwards Algerian Briar

My inlaws bought me an Edwards Algerian Briar for Christmas. It says handmade on the bowl as well as a marking of the letter "R". I was wondering what that marking meant. Can anyone help.

I am not the expert, but have a number of Edwards pipes. I am not sure if the letter means anything more than maybe the carver's initial. Some of mine have an odd letter on them.
