I did see EGR mentioned, but no alternatives suggested. Maybe it wasn't too popular .
I don't think EGR would be considered a "boutique" blend . It's been around for over 75 years . There are a lot of us who are up in arms over it's demise .
I would be interested to know how the sales volume compared to other Sutliff blends .

I picked up three tins of this back... well, a long time ago. I smoked one and enjoyed it tremendously, but I knew I wouldn't want a ton of an aromatic stockpiled, so I have merely held onto my remaining two tins.

For me, my enjoyment of this blend was the story of Jiminks saving this one by encouraging tons of pipe smokers to appeal to Sutliff to bring it back. Without this back story, it was just a chocolate liqueur aromatic with some latakia. And, now, I can't smoke it without thinking about Jim's efforts to save this one. It is definitely up in the top ten pipe tobacco lore stories, IMO.

I just talked to Steve at LJ Peretti . Nice guy . He told me to send him some & he would see if he could match it .

To show you what kind of a man he is , he said he'd send me a sample of his substitute to see if I like it......before I even pay him anything . Wow !

Will mail him some tomorrow .

I had a similar telecon with Steve at Peretti about a month ago and came away with the same astonishment.

Still working on this . Yesterday I received the sample from Peretti .

I sent @JimInks a pm asking if he would care to critique it . Jim has much more tobacco knowledge & ability to discern possible improvements than I do . He happily agreed to check it out .

Mailed it to him this morning . Hopefully I'll hear back from him within maybe a week & the EGR problem may be on it's way to a resolution.

Frustrating update : according to @JimInks , Peretti got the topping completely wrong . I'm not even sure what I could suggest they add to get it right .

On another front , the man at Watch City is actually eager to come up with an EGR clone . He indicated that a required tobacco simply isn't available at this time .
He basically told me to stay tuned..............
