Think of that: 26,000 tons is 52-million pounds. According to the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald Online Website, the ship's empty weight was 13,632 tons or 27,264,000 pounds. Accordingly, the total weight of the loaded ship was 79,264,000 pounds! It boggles my mind that something that heavy could even float, but it did...until Lake Superior chewed her in half like a dog dispatching a bone.
