I won an auction last night and promptly paid for it. Today I get a notice the seller cancelled it and refunded my money, no message, no email, nothing. Here is the description;

Estate Tobacco Pipes Batch - Dunhill, Savinelli, R Martin, Charatan's, Kriswell. Smokers. 1940s - 1960s.
auction-600x450.jpg

Got it for $60 shipped. No response from the seller and I don't think Ebay will be much help.

There could be many reasons for a cancelled transaction. As a person who has sold many items on ebay, I have cancelled a few transactions. Mine always seem to be that after auction end, the buyer wants to re-negotiate shipping or price or to send it to somewhere I dont ship. Could be something was wrong with the listing. I would'nt jump to anything before sending them a message and seeing what happened,

The fact that the seller cancelled and refunded without contacting me is what has me POed. If it was a problem with the listing and not regret over the amount of the winning bid a message would be the proper response. As far as I know a winning bid and prompt payment covers my obligations. I sent the seller a message, no response, and contacted Ebay.

How is their feedback and does the seller have either of these caveats in the description, I have the right to terminate the auction as it is listed elsewhere, the item description was changed prior to the ending. If the former they probably was offered more than you won it for privately, yeah it's sleazy but it has happened, a pipe or pipes got damaged and you may not have seen the description changed. Contact eBay resolution center if you don't then you do lose, if you don't win then there will need to be a reason for this action,good luck.

My last round of pipes I sold on ebay I had 2 seperate people give me grief. Number 1, won paid and then didnt want want me to send it in a box, but a envelope and refund any money difference. When I told him that I would not do that, he got upset. So I canncelled the order/ refunded his money/ and blocked him from ever bidding on my stuff again. Number 2, won then wanted me to ship overseas (which I do not, and state in auction). Both parties tried to open a case, and ebay quickly ruled against them. Communication was very open in both matters. And in no way am I suggesting that you did anything low like these people. I'm just giving examples.

Something similar happened to me recently.
I also collect old US Boy Scout patches and several lots I purchased promptly never showed. I contacted the seller and never got a response. After 72 hours - BTW, BSA collectors are usually very, very prompt - I contacted the Bay. Within hours I received full refunds for every lot purchased.
I emailed the sender and let him know if the patches were lost, and eventually returned to him, to please contact me and I'd buy them again. I never received a response and, subsequently, the seller has gone on to the turd bucket list.
Davet, you made a killer score. The seller more than likely got a better offer after the hammer went down. You were recompensed but left no venue to cry, "Foul!"
Sometimes, eBay sucks ass and I really hate that.

The seller had good feedback and no issues with the description other than "no returns". I assume it was a case of the winning bid not being high enough or a better offer. As far as EBay's rules he can cancel for almost any reason and almost any time, but they do state "When you list an item, you enter into a legally binding contract to complete the transaction if the item is sold. If you cancel the transaction, there could be other negative ramifications". Nothing I can do but leave negative feedback. I'll wait to see if I hear back from him.

As I said in the OP, I bid and won and paid, in full, within minutes. No communications until I get a cancellation notice and refund. The seller is in Canada and the listing said" ships to Canada " I appreciate your examples but don't see how they apply to this.

Educate me, please.
How do you leave negative feedback on somebody who welshes - no insults intended on anybody - man, woman, child - who lives in Wales.?
This guy sucks. How do we call him out?

That looks like a really great score. Too bad the seller reneged. Time to check all the seller's available communications on this offer to see who tipped him or her off to the potential value lost.

"Oh, really?" "The Dunhill alone is probably worth twice what the guy bid for the whole deal?"

Here is his response ;

" Hi. I'm sorry, but I was selling a number of items for my wife and these pipes were not meant to be included. Sorry for the inconvenience"

Right, I believe that. No hope but my response ;

"I purchased this within your terms and you cancelled without any communication with me, this is not how Ebay works.

" When you list an item, you enter into a legally binding contract to complete the transaction if the item is sold. If you cancel the transaction, there could be other negative ramifications."
And his next response;

I'm sorry, but it could not be avoided. This is the first time I have ever had to cancel a transaction and will no longer sell anything for another person.

Wait for eBay's response, but they can't force him to honor the sale. If he relists them, there still isn't much that you can do about it. My suggestion would be to move on.

As far as I'm concerned, that stuff belongs to you. I'd complain a lot. I'd file whatever action I could to freeze that person's Paypal account and screw up their eBay experience.
I have sold a lot of pipes at auction that brought much less than I expected. It never occurred to me to cancel the transaction. It's like welshing on a bet. Which essentially is what an auction is. As a seller one can win or lose big.
