There is this Savinelli pipe up for bids. It ends in 2 hours. There are zero bids on it. It is Savinelli, 504 derby Gran Prix #230967384613. Is this not a good pipe to own? Is this model not a good smoker? The starting bid is $10.99. Is that too much to pay for a nice used pipe?

Spud. This is just my opinion. I get leery of pipes that I can't see INTO the bowls of. Especially when the seller has a no return policy. There's some gunk on the rim and the stem need some cleaning up but that's doable.
The main problem IMO is the shipping. I don't know where your at but it's $22.00 to me. That's a minimum cost of $33.00. Way too much IMO for that pipe. I think you could do much better with that $30 bucks towards a new pipe or a better estate.
Just my 2 cents. And for the record I've never had a Sav Derby or had any experiences with them.

Spud, do yourself a favor. Go to a vendor like Smokingpipes.com. Very often you can find very decent estate pipes for around $50.00. That's just one example of a quality used pipe seller. You'll be glad you did!

Now, for new pipe smokers, eBay can be a minefield. If you don't know what you're doing you can end up throwing money away.

There's a thread on ebay purchasing that I started way back and others also added to it. Might want to do a search for it. I personally love ebay and have gotten some real steals, but I never take "chances". If I don't have a lot of confidence in the seller (like no returns accepted or low ratings), I steer clear.

I have picked up quite a few estates from Bay over the past couple yrs but I do the restore work myself so a 25.00 pipe cost me 25.00 rather than an additional 20-30$$ for restoring. E-bay can be very good, or it can be horrible, even if you know what you are looking at.

I have found some incredible deals on ebay for pristine estate pipes over the years. I do not refurbish pipes, and never buy ones that require it. I use a number of different sellers on ebay and on line estate dealers that I know sell quality merchandise and that have excellent reputations. This thread got me thinking that I should post a list of all the estate dealers I do business with so I just posted a new thread.

Just ask questions before you buy. Restoring pipes can be a fun activity for a noob :)
