I recently purchased a pipe rack with a tobacco jar on Ebay. The jar is not sealed, but has a lid that rests on top. My thought was rack some pipes and put a daily/regular blend in the jar for easy access.

To my surprise, the jar came full of tobacco. I can't place the smell, but it's probably a light aromatic. The tobacco is bone dry ribbon that is dark brown.

Should I ask the seller about the tobacco? Should I pitch it? Should I ask the seller anything else?

My gut reaction is to pitch the tobacco and let things be. Any thoughts would be appreciated in this semi-awkward situation.

An aromatic sitting around in an unsealed jar for some years isn't going to be very aromatic, however the base Virginia, if that is what it is, might be quite nice. If it hasn't turned to dust, it may smoke fine. I'd pack a small pipe, or half of a medium pipe, and take a tentative puff or two. Tobacco keeps better than you'd think reading Forums. If it's bleacchh or meh, toss it.

I wouldn't ask the seller anything through the Ebay platform. Mentioning tobacco is probably flirting with getting both accounts locked.

I just looked at my crystal ball and it told me the jar and rack in question was grandpa's. When he died some years they boxed all his stuff and it took a few years to go through. We found this and sold it on ebay, we know he liked his pipes and got his tobacco from the pharmacy next to the grocery store. No one remembers what kind it was.

I would try a bowl or two, myself. Could be very fun. Try one as is, and the. If needed hydrate a bit to see if that is better. I received a tin once that was 50 years or so old (at that time, would be probably around 65 years old today) of PA (wanted a nice tin, did not know there was tobacco in it). Tried it. It was surprisingly more potent than modern PA. It was nice.
