The other day I bid on this flame grain Kaywoodie #40. I got it for about $17. I think it's absolutely gorgeous! I have a soft spot for long shank pipes, such as lovats and Canadians. I haven't smoked it yet... I want to clean it out first. This is my first Kaywoodie and I am super excited about it.

Some will regard the following as heresy but decide for yourself. I have three Kaywoodies. One smokes brilliantly (a 22). Another was miserable (a 99s). I removed the stinger in the 99s past the threads and it is significantly better. I like my Kaywoodies and they are usually pretty light for their size making them comfortable for "lunting". If they have any problems, it's a restricted draw due to both the stinger and small airways (I use Falcon cleaners with them). I widened the airway on the third pipe and it made an improvement as well.
So, smoke it first but don't feel bad about removing the stinger or opening the draw if needed.

Congrats smokey - very nice kaywoodie. I am no expert, but seeing the clover on top of the stem may mean it's an older KW (1930s). Maybe a KW expert can comment. If it is that old, I would argue against jgriff's suggestion since it would affect it's value.
However, some stingers can be removed without damage, others must be sawed off - if you can do the former, no harm done. I've had a kaywoodie (just sold it actually) that smoked fine with the stinger, but like jgriff says, most smoke better without it.

Congratulations on your new pipe. In the early days Kaywoodie pipes were more expensive than Dunhill pipes. I hope you enjoy it for many years.

I should clarify that Numbersix is correct. Modifying the pipe in anyway can damage the resale value, whether cutting off the stinger or redrilling the stem. In terms of value, the biggie on Kaywoodies seem to be the 4-hole stinger vs. 3-hole stinger.

I've now got 8 pipes, with a recent purchase of a Kaywoodie on ebay, and it is actually one of the better ones I have after significant cleanup. Smokes very well, and I initially had low expectations for that one.

Nice lovat. I like my pipes with an open draw, but I like the way my one Kaywoodie smokes. The stinger actually cools the smoke for me, probably by slowing down the airflow and reducing the convection effect on the tongue. Hope yours smokes well for you.

I recently picked up two Kaywoodies and, after cleaning etc. I am very impressed with these old timers. My battery is dead on my camera so no pics. One is a 33 shape meerschaum lined, the other a 7706 Dublin with the logo on the top of the stem.

I am a huge Kaywoodie fan as well as the rest of the S.M.Frank line. They make some wonderful pipes especially when you start getting into the older stuff. Looks like yours is a 40 Medium billiard, short saddle stem, that shape was made from 1932-1972. the flame grain was introduced in 1937 so it cant be older than that. The clover was moved from the top to the side of the stem late 40s through the early 50s although some of them still had a top stamp just not many. When it comes in let me know about the stinger that will help with the dating. Also I cant tell in the picture but is it flame grain over Kaywoodie or Kaywoodie over flame grain. If flame grain is on top that makes it one of the earlier models.

I have two Kaywoodies. A Canadian and a billiard. Both smoke wonderfully. The Billiard came in a lot of pipes, and has a crack going down the bowl. It's not the prettiest, but it smokes great. It's my beater pipe.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing, everyone. Still cleaning it out, but I'll be smoking it soon. I'll post on how it goes. :) I'll see how the stinger does.

Nice find! Congratulations on your purchase!
I love Kaywoodies. When cleaning the airway that goes through the stinger, I've found it easier to take a thin pipe cleaner that you've dipped in alcohol and rotate it into the opening from the stinger end, gradually working it back to the bit. If there's any residue built up around the stinger, the cleaner will do a better job of removing it when you go that route. Sometimes it helps to give the cleaner a slight bend at the end to help it move through the curve in the airway when going in from the bit.
Removing the stinger does kill the value. But if it's bothering you and you don't intend to sell it, then that's not an issue.

If THIS is the one that you got, that is an awesome Kaywoodie for $17. It looks like it may need to be reamed, and I'd give it good, deep cleaning, but otherwise it looks to be in great shape. Nice get!

Hey, Jason, that is my Kaywoodie! The $17 included shipping. It does need to be reamed out and cleaned up a bit, which is why it hasn't been smoked yet haha. Thanks for the comments!

Very nice Kaywoodie! I think I had my eye on that one myself. I love most of my Kaywoodies, but cleaning can be a pain. I've found that mini dental brushes are best for getting in the stinger holes.
