eBay Can Be a Dangerous Place!
While scouting about for a Zulu on eBay (which I found and bought), I came across this extra long Canadian, and I had to scoop it up

What was your best eBay find?

I have several great eBay finds, but this is one of the top ones. A 2014 unsmoked Don Carlos volcano.

I've had a number of good buys, and several not so good. One of the best was a group of 12 pipes that I picked up for $425. The group included a Barling Straightgrain, 4 Sasieni 8 dots, three Sasieni 4 dots, 2 Comoy Blue Ribands, one KBB Rivoli and one no name Algerian briar pipe. All were in excellent condition and cleaned up to be pretty mint without much work.
Deals like that could be found 8-9 years ago. Not so much nowadays.

I picked up this lot a month or two ago, Peterson Emerald 150 smooth, a rusticated Pete Emerald 53, Pete system 305, Jobey Shellmoor, Big Ben Ranger and a Dr.Plumb Dinky. There not high-end pipes but at $2 and change a piece its a good grab. There are deals to be had patience is key.

There were these 2 'lots' of 4 pipes...same seller...I got em all for less than $100.00 including shipping.

A few really good quality pipes with New York ancestry, a couple of very nice Kaywoodies, a Chacom (like new), a beefy LHS author, and all excellent smokers.

I had several good finds on Ebay over the years but this is the latest one - a Savinelli NonPareil Hungarian for Euro 40.00. I found cheaper pipes in the past but this was in particularly good condition and needed very little work.

Mine would not be a pipe it was a very rare, one of two made, 4 piece 2 tip FE Thomas bamboo fly rod. It closed at $1005. When I received the rod it was very evident the seller had no clue as to what he had so I asked for his phone number.
Ended up the seller was in his 80's and was liquidating his tackle since none of his children or grandchildren fly fly fished. I told him the rod was worth far more than the selling price even though it needed some work to restore it and I could not in good conscience keep it but I would contact a dealer so that he would get a better price for the rod.
He got quite a bit more for the rod which eventually ended up selling for close to 3 K, he also sold the dealer several rare reels he had due to my encouragement to not place them on eBay.

He told me he wished he'd found me prior to selling his fathers rod which was the twin to the one I had won. I asked how much did he sell it for and he told me $350.00 and the guy wanted it for bass fishing! :(
He then told me I would be repaid for my honesty and for helping him. Sure enough about 6 months later a bamboo fly rod showed up on eBay with poor photos but I know enough about what I could see of certain portions of the rod that I was comfortable in bidding and ultimately won the rod for $357.10.
When the rod arrived I was taken aback as it had the same name as the 4 piece I had purchased with Jr. after it. I contacted the gentleman and asked if this was his fathers rod to which he replied that it was. He asked me what I had paid for it and I told him, he then asked if I were going to tell the guy to which I simply replied "no, he had made money on it". He told me that he had said I'd be repaid for my honesty.
I took a trip to the Michigan Bamboo Fly Rod Makers Gathering in Grayling where I spent a week with Makers, collectors and just plain bamboo fly rod fishers and met the man, a retired dentist from Canada, who owned the first rod, we stood next to each other and cast the rods swapping them back and forth. While not the most valuable rod in my collection it is one of my favorites due to the back story, regards.

davet,
Yep, that's the pipe I got, and for $69. I think it was a good, as I have been wanting one over 7inches
