Our featured interview on tonight's Pipes Magazine Radio Show is with Dustin Patterson. He got into pipe smoking about ten years ago when he was working in robotics and automation and he learned about Sherlock Holmes’ practice of figuring out problems by taking time to think while smoking a pipe. Something that was really puzzling would be deemed a “three pipe problem”. Dustin wanted to see if this would really work. Fast forward to today where he had the idea of putting AI to the test with pipe related questions and to see how they compare to Brian’s answers. So tonight we have AI vs. Brian. At the top of the show in Pipe Parts, Brian will talk about his Disney Pipe and Tobacciana Collection.

The show airs every Tuesday at 8:00pm eastern US time, and can be found at PipesMagazine.com and all podcast apps.

Also failed to appear on my Apple Podcasts app. None the worse for it, of course, I essentially had exactly the same listening experience using the mobile version of pipesmagazine.com to stream the episode.

Now, for the content of the episode:
I found the DoP Vs. AI concept a refreshing one for the show and entertaining, if not particularly revelatory regarding the usefulness of LLMs (I also use AI for work, and remain unconvinced of its purportedly mind-boggling utility at this time). Still a fun idea, and kudos to Brian for doing it so none of us had to— I kid, I kid, also kudos to Dustin for the execution of those queries, which I’m sure took a little composing. Really enjoyed the Julian Lage; he’s an artist I’m somewhat familiar with, and I’m always happy to hear his adventurous and enthusiastic take on jazz guitar.

Always fun when you walk us through your pipe collection. Thanks for putting the Disney tobacciana on Facebook for us to see too.

The A.I. vs Brian was fun. I did go 3 for 3 on the aromatics, but bombed everything else.

I hope everyone at the Columbus show had a great time.

I saw the exhibitor list got updated for the Las Vegas International Pipe Show. Looks like a great group. Very excited for the show.

I am always using AI for my teaching and working on projects to save me time at the college, but I hadn't ever thought about it for picking pipe tobacco. Of course, I had to try it out immediately on a couple of different large language models, and when I put in flavor profiles or requirements, it was right on the mark. Doesn't help me with small batch releases, but I am excited to try out a few new blends. Finally got my room booked for Vegas and can't wait to see you all in October!
