I would like to suggest something that may initially sound outlandish but
could in fact be true.
When Dunhill were experimenting with ways to make their pipes stand out from a distance, perhaps someone suggested using a white dot embedded into the stem. The workshop likely had no white rod to hand (why would they?) so some craftsman scratched his head and came up with the idea of using ivory for said spot.
The craftsman sourced some ivory (quite plentiful back then) and managed to fashion a piece to use on a test pipe just to see how it looked. It looked great and it was decided that a white dot would be their method of marking their pipes.
The craftsman then says he had a devil of a time creating the perfectly round insert using ivory so some white rod was specially ordered to do another trial run......and the rest is history!
Farfetched? Yes, quite likely but not an impossible scenario :

Brilliant thread and thanks to George for conducting the experiment.
