I've been an avid Dunhill collector and have wondered what the reason is for the various incarnations of silver banding. Specifically, one that I just purchased has a very think band and unusual markings. It seems like especially Dunhill would have more uniform silver work...?

Why would that be the case? One of the characteristics that distinguishes Dunhill is its varied and highly creative work with precious metals. Check out the very elaborate silver work that Dunhill produced in the late 1970's.

@ iamn8 - Of all the Dunhills I have seen (and own) that is the one I covet. The black shell briar is beautiful but that band is to die for.

Exactly my point minus the sarcasm. What's with the variations in the silverwork?
Andy, yeah I have the same appreciation of aesthetics. The dark blast in a billiard with a thick silver band is my favorite. I paid WAY too much for it, but it grabbed me. I've recently branched away from Dunhill into Cooke and S. Bang and believe this Dunhill is a perfect way to end 2014.
I still very much wonder what's with the band variations though. For a company so dedicated to its own traditional way, regardless of your feelings about them, it seems strange to me.

Dunhill has done some pretty elaborate metal banding over the years. Some of the RDTA pipes have crazy silver work. The Special Editions, like this Pagoda pipe are very unique.

One of the reasons I've always liked Dunhills, and I've owned a couple, is that they always pushed the envelope with regards to design. Keep in mind that it was Dunhill's envelope and that they were and are catering to a select and conservative customer base. "Mountings" is an area where they would sometimes go to extremes. The artistry Dunhill allowed their smiths made for some very striking pipes which, while conservative in shape and finish, are still spectacular.

Thanks warren! Best explanation I've heard. It would make sense with such traditional shapes you'd use the silver os a way to further express. Thanks!! I've always been a fan of the Dunhill name and believe they do terrific silverwork although you can bet your bottom dollar somebody shall come along and "set us straight". ;)

SSJones, I've seen that 5128 Cumberland around before and is without a doubt one of my all time favorites which I'll buy should I ever find one.

I always loved my first Dunhill, a 5128 Black Briar. I thought the silver was classy, but I've not yet seen another. It simply reads their address.
