Another round of ranting,

and an earnest plea for consideration if mayhaps someone from the White Spot market research department happens to see this.
Alfred Dunhill created the greatest range of pipe shapes ever; that many of the designs lay neglected in the dustbin is a crying shame --- how about going through the old catalogs and nominating some for a revival.
And while you're at it, please drop the silly generic 4 digit code system and bring back the proper shape numbers/letters,

the 4 digit code is totally unromantic and too overlapping, what a drag.
Learn how to make a correct FishTail stem again, please dig through your musuem and find a few specimens from back in the day when the craftsmen actually knew what a FishTail meant --- then, make your current stem-makers replicate them until they are dexterous enough to do it without reference. Rigor must be imposed. Also, bring back the F/T stamp.
Find a competent case-maker and start offering cased pipes again, I mean like in the old days, nice velvet and alligator skin (or whatever) and all that, and be sure to use your patented VentiCase design too, after all, you own the patents, might as well make use of them! With the prices you are asking, such things are to be expected.
Bring back the Own Design option. Collectors would love it! You could have an "off the shelf" range of odd catalog shapes as well as offering up anything the customer may want "bespoke upon request". Of course, such pipes would be very expensive and wouldn't exactly be a big seller, but it would reinforce the exclusivity of the White Spot, and such "halo effects" are important in marketing terms.
Since Algerian briar is available again, get some and oil-cure it and then blast the living hell out of it, call it an Antique Shell or something.

I would be a potential customer in such a wondrous event.
There are other things I could mention,

but that's enough for now.

They need to spend some time in their pipe archives reviewing pipes from the past and try to emulate the traits that made Dunhill so great in the first place.
This is true, I think, of all things with a history.
Organic/gradualist thinking says that what succeeded may be improved upon, but changing it pushes us into the world of human conjecture, not response to our world...
Too many are just the Ego writ large as a new generation asserts itself and damages the brand in the process.
Nice set however, "except for the bamboo," as someone said.

That's a cool set for sure. The bamboo is well done, 2 knuckles on each pipe and perfectly matched in the Dunhill tradition.

That said, it just doesn't float my boat............ the shanks look way too short, like they HAD to use bamboo.....

IDK, for me, the old blasts were the best.

I picked up this 7 day set for half the cost(yes, I think I got lucky)....

I love the blast on these, and every time I open the case, the most AMAZING floral aroma greets me... I would love to know what tobacs were smoked in these... quite lovely indeed. The set came from Paris....

now for my Dunhill rant....... bring back the TANSHELL!! Some of my best smokers are 1950s-60s Tanshells....

Totally agree with Troy- make dunhill DUNHILL again!........

Sorry if this is a bit incohesive-- I had to work 16 hours a day for the last three days.............I'm a bit whacked.

You evidently got a bad Dunhill and they offered a replacement or your money back.. You took the cash and then continue 'go off' on them. There are a lot of makers/styles I'm not into but don't waste effort thrusting them. JT Cooke comes to mind. They all have that silly blast and they all sell instantly at $800+.

Matt,

that's what I'm talkin' bout!

DUNHILL in the finest of form!
Proper venticase with spectacular blasts, and man, they look is such fine condition too.
If I were you, I'd be tinglin' with electricity from head to toe every time I opened it up.
It's a jawdropper.
Congratulations on scoring such an incredible thing.

Smoke thee well.
It couldn't have went to a better man, all that good karma coming home to daddy!
I mean, you giving that rare old Barling Niblick to Sablebrush was one of the coolest things I've ever seen, to read his reaction brought me pure joy - and the gifts you gave to me blew my mind, and I'm sure there are other numerous examples which display your gentlemanly character traits and that big warm heart you have.
It's people like you who make this hobby such a wonderful thing.
Brother,

you're the best!

Thanks for the kind words gents!

Those are the e-bay pics, I haven't had the time to photograph them proper, and when I do I'll post to the Dunhill thread...... :D
Congratulations on scoring such an incredible thing

Troy- that was pure luck...... I watched them sit all week with no bids on them. 1500 euros was the starting bid. I threw a max bid in for 1602 euros in the last 30 seconds and won. I really thought this set would go crazy high in the last few seconds, but only 2 bids??? I had just got a little tax return money that week too, thank God!!

Thanks again Troy. But you are being WAY too modest here....... YOUR generosity is beyond reproach! The Amazing posts you come up with are always fascinating, entertaining and educational- no small feat....... :worship: And the baccy-bomb (and pipe! :D ) you hit me with was one of the most generous acts I've experienced.......... Many, many thanks to you, Brother!!........ :puffy:
And speaking of that Niblick..... I couldn't imagine it belonging to anyone BUT Sablebrush. That man taught me, via this forum, SOOOOOOO much about Barlings and other marquees.... He's an encyclopedia of knowledge, and SORELY missed here. I'm hoping he will return one day. My big regret was not smoking that Niblick before I shipped it though, just to say I smoked one!! Keep it real................. :puffy:

EDIT: The Niblick has been added to the Pipedia Barling page, all cleaned up too!

Those 7 day sets are nice! I mean really really nice.
It just seems (to me at least) that the buttons are out of proportion and look like Bluto where traditionally they've been more like Olive Oyl.
MLC, I agree that they look a little juiced up, but I really like the way they clench. I have come to the conclusion that the deeper/wider/thicker button helps pull my lower jaw forward when clenched. This is a good thing for a guy like me who has an over bite. As a clencher with an over bite, the newer Dunhills have become some of my favorite pipes.

Wow... I'm a 'shell' lover when it comes to Dunhill, but that bamboo set is incredible!!

Watching this bamboo Dunhill set confirm my impression: I don't like their bamboo pipes.

There is something in the bamboo selection, cut and dimension compared to bowl and stem that miss balance.

Same feeling I have with Castello bamboo pipes. While I really like some bamboo pipes from Tom Eltang, Becker, Yuki Tokutomi, just to mention some.

The Nanna set stole this thread from Dunhill IMHO LOL!
I don't think a 7 day Nanna set would sell for that price in the current market, I would be pressed to think that with the current Chinese influence, it would go for multiple times that.
