MSO: I know nothing about Kaywoodies, but I do recall many 1950s prices. My Dunhill, a #4 panel cost $22 new. I saw one on Ebay recently for $2500, and they were still bidding. I had thrown out my similar pipe after several years because I never got a good smoke out of it. The Wilkes ran $20 to $100. A $20 Wilke was the best pipe I ever had. Charatans were $20 to about $30. They had an awful tasting stain and smoked poorly. My Peterson cost $18. IT was a great pipe, far better than current Petes. Danish Stanwells cost $16 or $18 and were not worth the price. A big cherrywood was $50, clays 25 cents. The Wilkes were the best of these pipes. I had several. In 1971 I bought a great pipe for $50 in Cogolin, France. The brand was Corrieu. In 1973 I paid about $55 for a Ben Wade which was awful. I recently sold it to a dealer for $175.

Thanks foggy'! That puts the pricing of an array of pipes into perspective. I've bought most of my pipes in the last ten years, though some go back 40 years. Some of those prices have changed noticeably even taking inflation into account. I couldn't buy a new Ser Jacopo for what I payed on sale at smokingpipes just a few years ago. Peterson's have crept up slowly, and most of mine, which have not had quality control problems, cost less than the current low end. My go-to N.C. carver, Jerry Perry, was still selling at 2002 prices when I last bought one, I think two years ago. Dr. Grabow is still a good bargain. I like French pipes for value on the dollar/franc, for factory made.

Hey REV, good to see you posting again.
In June of 1964, I bought a Dunhill Shell Canadian as a graduation present for myself. The cost was $25.

rav' and loner', just to be clear, these were new pipes? If so, fascinating they were in that price range that recently, though those prices were more then than they would be now.
