The 1964 one will be a dream. Unfortunately, newer Dunhills or The White Spot rather are very mediocre pipes for their price. They've definitely declined.

Not by my experience. My 2014 The White Spot pipe was outstanding in every facet, stem, button, drilling. Easily as good smoking as my older Dunhills. The stem/button work was a big step up from a new Castello in that same era.

Now, they are expensive, and don't hold their value. I bought mine when the dollar was really high, from an Italian dealer, so at just over $200, a good value. That pricing has evaporated, so I'd only consider an estate if that itch were to strike again.

I was recently at an airport when my belt buckle hit the urinal. "Well, that's done for," and into the trash it went.

Next to the toilet stalls was a Dunhill store and just my luck, a full rack of belts! $300-$400 for a belt put me off and I spent the next 18 hours keeping my pants up with my thumbs.

Not a pipe in sight either. A few $400 wallets caught my eye, but I've got a $20 job from a street vendor in Argentina that looks pretty sharp.

It's all a shame really. With one of my Dunhill pipes hanging from my jaw, I would be finely matched with a nice belt and an empty wallet.

I've not followed Dunhill fashion (it's about as exciting as my grandfather's wardrobe), but I do wonder if those prices have climbed in line with the pipes or if it's always been that way.

But, yes, Dunhill pipes can be great. I like their bamboo offerings and have a really good example of a ring grain paired with bamboo (2010) that is a regular smoker for me.

That's some very good looking Britwood you've got there. I plan to eventually add some prewar English pipes to my little collection, mainly because I want to smoke some pipes from the days of the Empire, and I like the gentlemanly English aesthetic cultivated by Dunhill in particular. Like you, I've mainly been in TAD mode lately, but I keep eyeing pipes like these. Nice little collection you've started sher

I know exactly what you mean, Lawdawg, because I feel the same way. My fondness for pipes like Dunhill and Barling comes from the fact that they remind me of that great era in England’s history. Even though I wasn’t alive, I feel connected to that era due to larger than life figures like Tolkien, Lewis, Churchill, “James Bond,” and the Englishmen of that era, who came home from World War II and started a proper family.

The 1964 Tanshell is what I would describe as a magical smoker. I just put some Stonehaven in it and enjoyed my first day of Fall. The smoking qualities of this pipe is unlike any other in my collection. While my Barling and Savinelli Sterling Spigot each have excellent smoking qualities (including the amazing flavor I get from the Barling), the draw on the Dunhill is magical. It is smooth, clean, and light in a way that I almost can’t describe. Smoking the Dunhill was a seemingly effortless experience, and the tobacco stayed lit for a long period without puffing.

I then went “chimney” mode on it while clenching it lightly and enjoying the Autumn sunset. The briar barely even became warm. Because this was my first time smoking it I cannot say much more except that it truly is a different, special pipe that I feel drawn back to, and it draws me back to another era.

I've had two 1974s and one 2008. Drilling was equally bad on all three and none of them would pass a pipe cleaner.

I have four newer Dunhills from 2011 to 2016. Two of them smoke exceptionally well - the other two are,
expressed benevolently, rather mediocre smokers. That quote is not good enough for me to get more of their newer pipes. My '63 Shell O smokes like a dream and has contributed to my decision of no longer buying any new pipes with some Italian exceptions, off course puf

By the way, congrats to those nice aquisitions, americaman!
