Hello all, I've come to the bottomless well of knowledge again in hopes of solving a mystery.
I have recently acquired a beautiful Dunhill Shell Briar Dublin. The pipe is absolutely amazing however, it has a string through the bowl and stem with two lead hallmark like round stamps with no markings. At the stem end of the pipe there is also attached to the string remnants of an old paper tag. The pipe stem looks as if it had been cleaned with just a hint of teeth marks but this looks like it has been done a long while ago. I am curious if anyone knows if Dunhill actually provided a service of cleaning their pipes and then meticulously attached a string through the pipe with possibly the owners info. Or the pipe has some dignitary significance since it was acquired in the Washington DC area. Perhaps it was a used price tag that hung from the pipe. It really is a mystery to me as I have not come across a Dunhill like this one. This one just has a different 'feel' to it. Any info or imaginative explanations are greatly appreciated.
