Starting to Get Obsessed

Did a search for this here in the forums and didn't find anything so I thought I'd start one up. Just finished smoking a couple bowls of this, and nearing the end of the tin I have to say this is my favorite tobacco so far out of the few short weeks I have been smoking. What do you think about this tobacco, and can you recommend another Latakia blend that I might like since this was so good (maybe even a flake).

If you enjoyed MM965, you might like: Balkan Sasieni, Peterson Old Dublin, C&D Star of the East, SG Squadron Leader. I can't think of a flake in the same camp unless you want a VA/Lat flake : SG Balkan Flake. There's Penzance too, but I imagine you are looking for something readily available....

MM965 is almost a daily staple for me. I like to let it age about a year and try to stay that far ahead of my usage. Cigars International usually has tins for $8, so I stock up.

Also Newminister English Oriental, I can't decide if I like that or MM965 more. The English Oriental is sweeter and more oriental forward, but I would highly recommend it if you like 965 that much, and it's only 35$ a pound.

Try some Dunhill Nightcap, it's a good Lat-heavy smoke. I've had Early Morning Pipe, but didn't care for it. I've never had 965, I'll have to add it to the list.

965 is one of my go-to tobaccos. Other English blends I like are Nat Sherman 536, Nightcap, and Altadis Fox and Hound.

I have an unopened tin of G.L.Pease Westminster, which gets very good reviews. I do Latakia blends in rotation with other

tobaccos -- straight Virginias and burleys, Va/Pers, aromatics, cavendish and over-the-counters.

I smoke more 964 more than pretty much anything else-it's the tobacco I carry in a leather pouch at all times. It's one of my top three, with Nightcap and GLP Westminster holding the top two spots. I'd say Nightcap is definitely the first blend to try if you like 965.

Resurrecting this thread because I didn't want to start a new one.
I purchased 2oz of MM 965 in bulk a month or so ago, and have been steadily smoking it in different pipes. I know that everyone has their own tastes regarding each blend they smoke, but this one has gotten pretty consistent good reviews. I'm finding 965 much like I found Squadron Leader, very bland. I think the only time I almost enjoy it is during the charring light. After that any flavor that was there just disappears. It's very mild, and most of the descriptions on sites say it's a medium blend. I would categorize this as a mild one at best.
Does anyone have any experience with the tin version AND bulk, that can verify a distinct difference in either?
I'm not trying to make this something it's not if that's the case, but by statistics alone, I would think I would at least find it ok. It's really turned out to be a blend that I wouldn't recommend.

MM 965 is one of those blends I really wanted to like but I just can't seem to make it work for me. The taste is something like chewing on a mouthful of aspirin tablets. Now Squadron Leader is one of my favorites so I can't say what my problem is here. I'm thinking I got a bad batch or I just don't have a compatible mouth chemistry for 965. I gave the remainder of the pound I bought to my son. He'll smoke anything. When I ask him what 965 tastes like he just says, "tobacco".

Al I"m mixing 965 with Nitecap when I don't want a roubust smoke. Bought 2 lbs of 965 and 4 lbs of Nitecap, those 2 tobbacos along with McBarens H&H Highland blend are my mainstays. Didn't like 965 at first but it grew on me.

965 is in my top 5, but I need to be careful and slow to get its best. Brad is right - 50/50 965 and Nightcap is a fine smoke.

One of my regular five blends I've decided to stick with. Nightcap and EMP are two of the others. All excellent tobaccos.

I'll need to try mixing it with Nightcap. Should be interesting, they're by far and away my two favorites.

I'd like to try Ol limey bastard by B&B tobacconists, it's supposed to be like the original 965. I would recommend Charles Fairmorn's Lancer slices for a readily available lat flake that's very affordable. Smokey sweet.

Smoked a bunch of Dunhill 965 tinned, as well as the McClelland match "Nine to Five" which comes in bulk. I really prefer the McClelland version, more interplay between the various flavors, and more variability in the flavors when going through a bowl. Nine to Five is in my top five blends.
If you're after another Latakia recommendation, give MacBaren's HH Vintage Syrian a try - wonderful incense like aroma and really smooth for Latakia-forward blend. If you've only smoked Cyprian Latakia, do try something based on Syrian Latakia, you can taste and smell the difference.

I've heard a few good things about the McClelland Nine to Five blend. I've got that on my list as to sample. I dont think I'll be revisiting the 965 though.
I've tried the Vintage Syrian and it is good, and I've also had the Wilderness blend and I found it very nice. I believe it has Syrian latakia in it too. I've got the 3 Oaks Syrian as well on my list to try.
