If you like your Lat, smoke Nightcap. I've tried all the English-blend Dunhills, and found them all to be just milder versions of it.

The taste is too sharp, almost acrid, and the room note is sort of sour like ammonia.
I had this exact same thing happen with newminister english luxus, it was an ammonia like taste too, just really really disgusting. I don't know what happened but I added some moisture and let it sit and now it's awesome. Same pipe too. Just let it sit and it should transform, I also find a bit of age on mm965 bulk brings out some tangy in the Va's.

I go back and forth on 965. I prefer London Mix, but the 965 is a smooth and nice smoke for a change. Some days it seems too light though

I think Nightcap has Perique and 965 doesn't, if I remember correctly. Also, Nightcap has a more definitive nicotine kick.

I like to rotate my Latakia blends with other tobaccos and blends. I find the Latakia is more pleasing when it is not present

every smoke, and same with Perique. If I had to go with only one blend, it would probably be an old timey burley/Virginia/

Cavendish blend, but I might tire of that too. Variety really makes the pleasure, in many cases. A few days off smoking

can set up a really great smoke too.

I tried 965 for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Straight out of the tin and into a bowl, it did seem a little bitter.
I transferred it to a mason jar, and now a couple of weeks later it is a very different animal - smooth, smokey, citrus. Very nice!

this post makes me want to break out my tin of 965 that I have not touched in some time. I find 965 to be pretty mild and well balanced in general--not much of a Lat bomb and perhaps with a stronger taste of Virginias than other English blends.

I smoked 965 for the first time last week. I bought a few ounces on bulk, and I found it very nice indeed. Still holding out on the maiden Nightcap voyage. That one I bought a tin of, and I still have some other samples to try first.

I had my second bowl of MM965 in a cob the other day. I am still not sure if I like it. I found it to be bitter just as yaddy306 mentioned. I think I will wait a few more months and then try again.

This is a 965 post, but several people have mentioned verging on Nightcap. For a first Nightcap smoke,

I'd do a small bowl pipe or a partial bowl, to get he measure of the blend. Also, I found that it improved

a lot after several days of being opened. If you are nicotine sensitive, maybe smoke it in the late evening,

as the name of the blend suggests. It's great tobacco, but I charged into a new tin and a large bowl pipe,

and though I enjoyed the nic high, it made me wary of it, until I came back around and got to know it more

gently. Once you know what it is, you may find it is a favorite, as many do.

MM 965 has been one of my "big jar" favorites for many years. I moved toward Nightcap for a while, but am moving back to more moderate blends. Right now, I have 3 "big jars" open: MM965, Nightcap, and Westminster. NC is fading, to be replaced by something else (not sure what just yet), but MM965 & Westminster will remain. FWIW, Westminster only reached BJ status when the Dunhill brand became unavailable some years back.

965 is great IMO. I was recently at a beach vacation and smoked 965 exclusively, and didn't really miss anything else. I'd've liked a more lat-heavy blend to rotate with, but it wasn't a "man, gotta have something else" kind of thing.
After I got home I smoked a 50/50 965/Nightcap mix - that was very, very good in my inexperienced opinion. The strength and lat-hit of the NC with the bit of sweetness from the 965; really nice. I have a few English tins opened with which I need to acquaint myself, but after that I'm planning on revisiting 965 and Nightcap more fully. IMO you can't go wrong with either.
