You scored again, Mike! And you've done the smartest thing building up a network of people contacting you. That's just brilliant.
Can't wait to see the after pics.

Not so fast now, damn, damn, double damn, I just found a crack in the outside of the bowl. It is a bad one but doesn't go all the way tru that I can see. I just may have to send it away to have it repaired properly.

Sorry to hear about the crack. I will say that I've heard of black superglue being used to fill stem dents. I believe it's a technique Al uses.

You did well sir, enjoy the pipe. About the crack, it may be of no consequence if it is not through the wall, can you share a photo?

Great find Fisher!
My wife loves antiquing. You may have just persuaded me to actually go with her next time!
Excellent. To all who doubt antiquing, I say get out there and try it. You won't find a Dunhill every time (if at all), but it's always fun to look! I've even found pipe racks at thrift stores. The stuff is out there, save it!

Funny story: A few years back I was at a flea market in NJ, and spotted a glass jar full of pipe stingers. Must have been about 50 in there. No pipes. Just metal stingers. Lots of them. The seller had no idea what they were. I provided the explanation. I didn't buy them, as I told him I too remove my stingers and I too keep them in a jar at home.

My first excursion down antique shop row, near Poughkeepsie NY, I saw a nice old Dr. Grabow too much

like good bulldogs I already own, and a bunch of lesser free-hands. I'll try again. A Dunhill for $20 you

can't beat. Restore it and you have a friend for life.

Mike, the wet towel and hot iron is used to removed dents in the briar. Never heard of using that method on stems. Careful application of heat( as stated above) can lift shallow toothmarks etc. Careful sanding and filing will get rid of some or all, depending on depth and location. They can be filled and if done correctly the repairs are hard to see. Personally if I were mine I'd send it out for a replacement stem. It's well worth the cost.
I'm with ejames, you can steam dents in the briar, but not the stem.

You can lift some vulcanite dents with a careful application of a lighter flame. But, don't burn it, that is harder to fix the dent. I have also filled some vulcanite dents with superglue (regular with pipe ash to make it black or the new Black Superglue, good stuff).
I haven't used Superglue for a crack repair, I'd be tempted to use JB Weld or something similar (from the inside of the bowl). I haven't yet encountered that kind of repair.
Wow, you should only get one Dunhill at a junk shop, not two!

Ack. I'm never that guy. Around here, where only about 6 guys have smoked a pipe since the moon landing, if you find pipes at antique stores, they are crusty old Grabows that are beat up and burnt out with poor fitting stems.
That being said, I did clean up a couple about a month ago from the above category that ended up being purty little pipes.

Nice job Fisher!! The best I've been able to accomplish is a really nice old Barling from the 60's. Same shop I found that one at had another rack of pipes that nobody could get to, they were pulling it down for me so I can see them next week. One of the pipes had a noticeable white dot that I could see, I'm hoping its a Dunhill.
