As I recall, it was to be able to fit the "Horrors of Smoking" imagery/warnings/advisory required in Europe on the tins.
edit: misread your question.

There were still square tins being shipped as of late last year - even some shipments I heard of that had both square and round, as the stock changed over.
When they actually started tinning in round, who knows. By the time you see it, it could have been 6 months or two years depending on where you buy from and how it's picked off a shelf.
Also, rectangle flakes in round tins is ridiculous. The end.

The switch from square to round happened around March/April of last year. There used to be a thread on here somewhere about the codes on the square tins and how they correlate with particular dates. You may need to search the forum or post a picture of the back label so someone may be able to help? I'm guessing it's 2014? Was Dunhill Flake around in 2004? It went from Light Flake to Flake at some point, but I don't remember when that happened and if there was a lull period between production of the two?

My local B&M regularly ages tins for years before putting them on the shelves. Its a nice setup, it helps me come to terms with the high tobacco taxes in Oregon. Just the other day I picked up a tin of Mcclelland Yenidje Supreme, the $20+ price tag hurt a little but then I saw it was 10 years old.

Thanks for the help guys, Im pretty sure the Dunhill Flake is from 2014.

As a side issue, in theory the square tins were said to be less dependable over time in staying sealed. I suspect, sitting on the shelf, a square tin would stay sealed as well as any, but maybe in shipping, or in a residential move, a square tin might take some knocking around or pressure that would affect it more than a round tin. So by that line of thought, assuming the prices stayed the same, the customer had an upgrade with them going to a round tin. Now that Dunhill claims to be going out of production, we're only talking about the durability of tins of aging leaf. ;'[[[[[ ...that's from the cat. Arg.

Rectangles in round tins are the kinds of decisions that put companies out of business!

Yeah, but... rectangles in round tins. Am I the ONLY one bothered by this? It's absurd!
Next thing you know, they'll put circles in rectangles.

Pretty sure this was a reaction to the FDA Deeming Regulations. Seems to me Dunhill, as with many other blenders, have gone to the same round tin for all of their blends, so they only have to do one type of warning label for all the tins. Saves on production costs. Peterson I think shifted to all round tins about two years ago.
