That is probably the exact same Dunhill I would buy, though a County in that shape would be mighty tempting. Were you able to the "taxfree" price?

@buroak: Yes, I posted a screen shot of what the checkout looks like on the other Al Pascia thread. I did later receive a customs bill for $18 ($11 customs and $7 Fed-Ex..."fee").

As this thread has flushed some buyers of new Dunhills out of the brush, I would like to ask if anyone can speak to the rumblings that Dunhill stummels currently are being turned in France. Is this true?

France? I heard something about Spain once (or was that Peterson?). Anyhow, I'm not sure why it would matter. I do remember seeing a Dunhill manager quoted once saying that occasionally Dunhill would buy stummels from other factories when the price and quality were suitable. This wasn't a recent reference, I don't think.
In any case, all Dunhill pipes are fitted with a Dunhill stem and the entire pipe is finished by Dunhill to Dunhill specs. In the end, that's what matters. To me, anyway.

ssjones and pitchfork, I first ran across the rumors on other pipe forum sites. I cannot remember how I even found those discussions, but I saw that claim in several places.

Here is one of the forum discussions in which this rumor appears: http://brothersofbriar.forumotion.com/t9431-old-versus-currently-made-dunhill-pipes

I think I've read that thread before, buroak, or seen one like it. I don't know what the "made in France" reference is based on, but I just bought a new Dunhill pot and it was at least the equal of estates I've had from the 60s or 70s. Fit and finish were perfect. Draw is nice. And with the the Euro priced the way it is right now, it was only slightly overpriced. In general, I think Dunhills are overpriced, but not overrated. For certain classic shapes like the pot, the billiard and the zulu, nobody does them quite like Dunhill. And the bulldog.

I never saw anything to substantiate those rumours. But if that strummel is French made, I say "Vive la France"!

In contrast to a new production Castello, the Dunhill is a smidge better in very area, particularly the button end.

Now that's a beauty! Someday, I won't have kids in the house, remodeling to do, student loans to pay, or a masters degree to pursue....and then I'll buy sweet pipes!

Congratulations Al. Alpascia is my main source for pipes now. With the Euro down, even the UK pipe shops, which charge in English pounds, cannot compete. Alpascia is also completely reliable, and the manager is a gentleman. Hope to see you some time this year.

Mighty snazzy for sure. If I just took delivery of that pipe, it would bother me that I couldn't smoke it much in public.
