I don’t know why, but I’m a little skeptical of this pipe.

I picked it up at an antique store for I think, $10.00.

I’ll post pictures but it says, on the right:

MADE IN ENGLAND
“INNER TUBE”
CANADIAN PATENT
197385/20

And then closer to the bowl on the right hand side:

347

On the left:

DUNHILL LONDON

and toward the bowl:

A6

The stem was busted, so I had another one made and put on.

It smokes great but there is a faint “soapiness” maybe “sour soap” kind of taste that sometimes comes through in the smoke, and is always present on an empty bowl draw.

I tried to look up the pipe to see if it’s year, but, didn’t really have luck. Something about the year didn’t match up with the type of pipe (Canadian) which made me skeptical. Also, the stamping seems sloppy?

Haha, any thoughts appreciated, especially if it’s possible to get that taste out of it. Tried giving an overnight pipe cleaner bath, but to no avail.

Nice find! The pipe is a legit Dunhill. The patent # should be 197365/20, not 197385/20.
Here's some info from Pipedia:

PATENT No. 197365/20

[1927 up to 1937*] The patent for Dunhill's aluminum Inner Tubes with flange registered in Canada (See the *Addendum 2).

The date code is just after the patent number (sometimes after ENGLAND): 1920 +: 7, 8, 9 and, 0 for 1930, then 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 for the early-30s. (they are smaller and underscored).

  • In 1927, this patent was stamped "PATENT. No. 197365/20".
  • From 1928 up to 1934 this patent was stamped "CANADIAN PATENT No. 197365/20".
  • In 1935 its stamped DUNHILL SHELL (without quotation marks and the possessive).
  • From 1935 up to 1937, the "PATENT. No. 197365/20" was, sometimes, stamped without the "CANADIAN".
  • "MADE IN ENGLAND" stamped on pipes intended for export, in these cases, stamped DUNHILL'S "SHELL" (without "BRIAR").
Sometimes the patent was stamped without any date code. See if there are any additional details that can help you figure out an approximate date here.

Looks like there is a date code after the word "England" on your pipe, but I can't make it out from your photos. The 347 is the shape #, and the "A" designates it as a 'Bruyere" finish. The "6" is most likely the size of the inner-tube.

Thanks! Your absolutely right… my initial inclination was 6 but it looks like it was double stamped almost to give an 8 look.

There’s no “No.” so it wouldn’t be from 28-34.

Seems like it would be 35-37

It’s hard to make out, but my wife and I think it says “10”

I was a little confused too because it didn’t come with an inner tube, nor did the stem it came with seem to have one. Perhaps it was a replacement too.

Putting it in the ol’ mental checklist: pipemasters clean and cure is a no no!
normally when people say that about pipe stuff I think someone likes it. But this is the first I've heard of it and I think that says something. Bet the soap taste is a ghost. Not what people normally mean, but an actual disembodied spirit of some old lady that will show up to complain about your tobacco choice and yell at you for getting ash on the table.
