Hi guys, I'm a very long time lurker , first time posting. Last night I opened a jar of bulk Nightcap I put away in 2018 . It was deffently not the nightcap I remember from the tins , very flat ,blah flavor to the point I may toss it !
My question is ,was there a big difference between bulk and tin to begin with ? Or did it just age horribly?

It aged badly. That happens. Bulk 965 and Nightcap were my staples when I started. They tasted the same to me as the tinned versions.

When I started smoking Nightcap I went to bulk Nightcap pretty quickly. I never found a difference to me. Back then though, I would go through a pound bag and order more. Never had more than three or four months age on it if I remember correctly. Didn’t cellar then.

I've got bulk Nightcap jarred in 2018 that I've smoked in the last couple of months. Tasted very fine to me. A little mellower for sure, but complex and tasty nonetheless.

Things mellow out. Especially Latakia. If it was put away in 2018, and kept in the jar with lid closed tight, it shouldn't have gone bad. But mellowed out enough for you to noticed the difference.

Agree. Aged latakia can be not as interesting. I wouldn't toss it, just enjoy it for what it is. You could try adding some blending latakia to get it to punch it's weight again.
