Though there is some novelty in it, the concept works. It's for smokers who spend a lot of time looking through a camera, work as a watchmaker, or something like that, and get tired of constantly setting their pipe down to "make room" in front of their face.
A less dramatic example is not driving a car with a long pipe. The first time you look over your left shoulder with a bit of vigor (right shoulder if you live in the UK), smoking only SHORT pipes while driving will make all the sense in the world. lol
Anyway, for whatever reason, Dunhill did not see fit to provide an swappable straight stem with this pipe.

The guy who bought it wanted one, though---not just a stem that "worked", but looked exactly like Dunhill made it---and the rest you can guess.

PS --- For anyone wondering, yes, there is a dot on both sides of the bent stem.
