There have been disappointments over the last few years, as blends change without notice, but I thought I could at the very least, count on Germain's Esoterica to remain some standard. Dunbar is a favorite of mine, a nice semi-aromatic with a base of high quality Virginias a bit of Perique, and an apricot topping that harmonizes with the Virginias rather than drowns them out.

I've managed to stock up on enough of the Esoterica blends that I like, so now I only buy for friends who haven't got my contacts. Such was the case with the last major drop around the end of last year, but the proprietor of one of the places I buy from had set aside a bag of Dunbar for me as opposed to whom I was buying for. So I figured why not and bought it.

A few months later I got a call from a friend, who had purchased a bag of Dunbar and had recently opened and found it really off, the leaf different and looking grayish, though he didn't see any mold, and the texture of the leaf was very different and the flavor was just off.

Shortly after than, I opened up this latest bag, and while the leaf didn't strike me as grayish, the texture was markedly different, like some of the thick hard stringy leaf that's gone into recent HU blends that were sucky versions of their former selves.

The blend tasted flat, the topping, what there was of it, was barely detectable. It was not a good smoke, and it sure wasn't Dunbar. I sent some to my friend and he corroborated that my Dunbar was the same as his, which he had ended up throwing out.

Esoterica quality has always been a tiny bit variable, Stonehaven being the most often cited, but Dunbar had been reliable year after year. And nothing was ever just flat out lousy. This bag was crap.

I'm hoping that it's a one off and not a sign of things to come, but we're both done with purchasing any further Esoterica. I really don't need any more, but will not purchase even as a service.

Good luck.

This is a 2021 batch? Everything I've smoked has been dated 2020 or earlier and still has that funky pungy apricot thing going on. Given everything going on with covid, brexit, shipping issues, etc. Im not surprised if its hurting their quality as of late.

2021 release, which means that the constituents would be from a few years earlier. Not everyone makes and releases blends made with green tobacco.

Very disheartening. I have alot that I've looked forward to opening. If the bags I have are not to my expectations I'll have no hesitation offloading all of it.

In my eyes there's only one blend left that I have blind faith in (please don't fail me Sutliff!)

I suspect the supply chain disruptions have been the primary cause of blends differing post-COVID. Which gives me hope that they can get back to the original recipes eventually. The only way to know will be to try and sample the various drops over the coming years. I would be reticent to write off Germains and K&K etc forever. The only way to know will be to try your favorites over time.

Possibly / hopefully covid related. With all the disruption caused along the supply chain, it's not unreasonable to think bundles of tobacco being neglected or not stored properly due to delays & lockdowns etc.

We’ll, I’m glad I stocked up on Dunbar when I did. Still sad to hear as it’s one of my favorites too.
And this may be a one off, though it's a hell of a one off. To let something this messed up go out the door isn't a good sign.

Domestically, I like Sutliff. They've got a lot of good blends, their match blends are freakin' bargains, and they've got stocks, since they're a supplier of tobacco to other makers and have been since 1849. Let's hope they continue to provide some great product like the Cringle Flakes and Seattle Pipe Club's Hogshead.

I hope that you guys are correct. But I think there's more at play here, including changing availability of sources, growers changing crops, and of course, changes in weather.

To be brutally honest, this has happened before with Germains & not so recently. I used to smoke their Brown Flake quite regularly. When they changed from tins to pouches 6-7 years ago (?) I experienced the same occurrence as you with your Dunbar. Just smelled & tasted seriously 'off' along with it's poor appearance. Taking a magnifying glass & discovering the same greyish matter covering the majority of the flakes, which I took to be mould. Sent the pouch back to my tobbaconist & he immediately exchanged it for another pouch. Same thing again! Unfortunately I'd smoked more than a few bowls of the first pouch before I decided to see what was wrong with it. The rank taste & affect it left have stayed with me & I've never smoked Brown Flake again. It's a strange one really, I smoke & have smoked loads more RDF & SLF over the years & have never had a problem. Some months ago a friend gave me a sample of Dunbar, I'd never tried it before & was looking forward to it. As soon as I saw it & smelt it however it reminded me exactly of the dodgy brown flake from years ago & straight in the bin it went! For such a small operation (which Germains are) you'd expect better but who knows what goes on.

I'm not sure about Esoterica, but I think it's been years since the last significant Germains drop in the U.S.
I was thinking that I would like to try it someday, so it's good to know I'm not missing much.
