Depending on the pipe, I rarely dump the ash. I just tamp, relight and smoke to just before the bitter end, and then clean out the bowl.

I have never had an issue with ash taste, probably because I can't taste shit anymore. I just find that some flakes have to be dried a little otherwise you get a pipe gurgle.

I rarely dump ash until the bowl is smoked. Don't see the need and in fact, if tamped properly, I believe the ash helps maintain a good draw.

another vote for this comment. I tamp when needed don't dump ash and found a layer of ash will slightly mitigate the effects of wind.
