I usually use my Zippo pipe lighter but I thought I would chime in anyway. Diamond matches are great but it's the Penley wood matches that truly strike anywhere. They are a little harder to find but worth it if you don't have a designated striking place handy. They come 300 or so in a box. Just thought I throw in my 2cents worth. :D

I use matches, but also light a wooden shishkabob stick with a lighter and use that for tobacco ignition.

I still have 3 boxes of the Diamond Brand that you can strike on any surface. Love em so much I don't want to use them.

I usually use wooden matches from some of the local cigar shops that I've accumulated over the years although I would like to buy a pipe lighter similar to Roth's

I just buy matches at the dollar store. They work perfect and are cheap. When I first started smoking a pipe, I only had paper matches. Did not work well at all. I started using these after a week or so and I always have used them. I only occasionally use a Zippo out of convenience due to wind or being out and about.
