If the mortise is briar, it really needs to have a metal cap/band/bullet or something to keeop the briar from getting forced apart by the pressure.

But, in my collection the best ones are vulcanite into vulcanite, especially the GBDs. It has the best seal and doesn't build up moisture in the mortise, like my capped military stems. I have a Ferndown spigot that gets wet when I just look at her wrong.

These can be a fine separation. I’ve seen Dublin's that look like Zulu’s and vice versa. But I agree with most that Zulu’s have a slight bend to the pipe.
Duane’s pipe is a classic example of a Zulu.

I've always thought Zulus had a slight bend in the shank as well as the stem, but looking at Duane's it appears the shank is indeed straight, but slightly tapered. The slight forward cant of the bowl and the slight bend in the stem simply gives the illusion that the shank is bent. Beautiful pipe though, and I'm considering one of those for myself.
