EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) - Bob

When you put a pipes worth of tobacco out to dry, do you estimate the amount needed or do you fill the pipe with tobacco and then empty it to get the exact amount?

in the pipe. Also as I smoke a tin I let it dry out naturally too. And typically the last bowl is very dry but it's a real eye opener how well super dry tobacco can smoke, it's a little more temperamental and you have to go extra slow. Yet for a lot of blends it's still great. But yes I pack the pipe and wait till it seems dry enough or I just don't want to wait longer. Most of my pipe smoking is done on the walk to work and the walk home. So maybe that's a big part of the issue.

A wide plastic jar similar to this will hold a couple days worth and it will start drying in the jar to an extent.
Also makes loading a bowl easy.

I just pour some out of the jar or pinch from the tin. I always take out more than I need, the leftover goes back in the jar.

I fill and empty or fill and leave it for a few hours. Sometimes I just light it immediately and if that's not it put a pipe aside for later and pack another one with different tobacco.
It's hard to tell when the moisture is perfect.
I like very dry anything but Latakia.

If I'm smoking a blend as it comes out of the tin, jar, pouch, or whatever, I'll just fill the pipe bowl and let it dry, for an hour or overnight or whatever. I've found that, for the most part, drier is better for me, but you have to suit yourself. If I am mixing blends or condiments, I do that in a pottery cereal bowl size bowl, eyeballing about three or four bowls usually. For me this works fine. Then that can dry for a few days while I smoke it up. It may be because I am in a fairly humid region in North Carolina, that drying too much is not often a problem.

I take out what I think will fit in the pipe I am going to smoke and let it dry. If there is a little extra I just put it back in the tin or jar it came from. I never let a whole tin dry out as I prefer my flakes and plugs to have a bit of moisture in them.

You can dry a whole tin to the exact moisture you like, then jar it and you'll have a bit of moisture in each load, and many enjoyable bowls with no waiting.

A pipe's worth is too tedious for me if it's a blend I'm smoking daily...I normally keep a few days worth dry and in a separate jar.

If it's a blend I'm smoking sporadically, I do as olkofri described.
Yup this is what I do as well. Usually dry out an entire jar, or roughly a couple days worth at a time. Let it sit out for a few hours.
